Howa Ranchland
« on: July 13, 2011, 06:43:08 AM »
I just bought a Howa Ranchland in .308.  My first trip into the desert was less than thrilling.  It was very windy which made it hard to hold on target.  I shot a box of cheap Rem. Green Box FMJ's to season the barrel and to get on paper.
While I was on paper, I was all over it.  I shot a half a box of pretty good ammo which printed a 2" group +/- at 100 yards.  I think a little of the problem was me not knowing what to expect recoil wise out of a 20" barrel.  I think both the rifle and I got better over time.

Here is the question.  Does anyone out there have one of these and what kind of accuracy are you getting and with what bullet?

Mine has a very crisp trigger, very smooth action and I love the Hogue stock.

No 308, but have 223, 243 and 22-250's.  My 22-250 gave me 1 3/8" group at 200 yd 2 weekends ago.  Would do better than that but the crosshairs on this scope are too heavy, will be changing it out.  A local rancher here bought 2 Howa's and called Jim back and had him put 3 more back for him as the 2 he got were so accurate.  I gave one of the boys a 243 and just got the 223 with a 20" barrel.  Found another 243 in the back of one of the gun safes I don't remember buying. ???   I'll bet with different ammo and some trigger time, this will be a great shooter.  Mine are all free floated, check yours to make sure the barrel isn't touching anywhere.  DP

I took it out again today.  There was a gust wind which cause a bit of trouble and I wasn't having the greatest trigger squeeze day...just to damn hot to concentrate.  All in all however I shot a 1" MOA with some good remanufactured ammo and 165gr. Horanady SST balistic tips.  I think I can do better if the weather co-operates.  It is amazing how comfortable the rifle is to shoot in .308 with the Hogue stock and pad.  I could shoot it all day without fatigue or soreness.  I am going to reload some rounds with 150's and 165's next week.

Being a new gun & with the loads the gun likes yet undiscovered, looks like you have a shooter.
You will not make peace with the Bluecoats, you are free to go.
