I am building a custom 7mm wsm on a savage action and am curious about optimum barrel length was thinking about 27" just to be different but can't really find info on what other people are using.  So any opinions or suggestions would be appreciated.

I bought a 270 WSM from a dealer in Wis.  They had special ordered Browning A Bolt Meddallions with 26" barrels.  After doing a little home work, I found that going much shorter sort of defeats the purpose of the WSM or simular rounds that need the length to get
all the powder burned and resulting velocity, range etc

This is a good article on barrel length.

I like the tactical article, but it has it's limits as they even pointed out in the article in regards to the 300WM and the heavy bullets. So, the 7WSM is a different matter to a degree also, it depends on you objective & main purpose with this rifle, the OP doesn't say enough about that, how others could say what barrel length is needed for sure without knowing more info is odd indeed!

Don't mind me asking.  You already own one custom 7WSM on a savage action and  do you do any research on that rifle before you build?

Because if you notice that post is from march 4th and I was researching before ordering my barrel.  I have already received my barrel from Mcgowen and have had my gun put together for a little bit.  So that's why.

Again reason I asked is you show this as rifles you own

.243 Ultra varmint fluted, .243 bull, 4-22lr's, 357, 45LC, .280, 30-06, 2-4/10's, 20ga, 12ga. and a custom savage 7mmWSM and you asked about a barrel so I assumed you were building another my mistake.

And like I said the thread is from March I didn't have a 7 WSM listed as a gun I own until I received my barrel and put the gun together.

I just added 3 periods to the end of my signature and it now has the three periods clear back up on my march 4th post.  So that's why if you change your signature it changes it on all of your posts.    .
