45 or 50 grain for new 223 varmint rifle reloads
« on: January 01, 2004, 11:48:58 AM »
Howdy.  I currently load 40 grain Vmax in my .221 Fireball, and 55 gr PSP in my 22-250.  Today I picked up a 223 Rem varminter, and am debating what bullets to try in it.   I would prefer a 45 or 50 gr spitzer, as I have lighter and heavier covered.  Targets are crows, gophers, rock chucks and maybe a coyote or two.   Any opinions welcomed.

Tom

Howd'y:
I like 50 V-max in front of 25.5 Varget.
Also 55 Rem PLHP 25.5 varget or 26.2 of 748.
I am going to give the Rem 50 PLHP a try.
With the 55 Rem I get .50-.75 with 748 at 100yd. out of my
14" Contender.

I prefer the Speer 50 gr. TNT over 23.5 gr. of AA 2230.  This little hollow point is deadly accurate and will dump a groundhog with no exit wound.  It just kinda liquifies the innards.

I moly-coat mine, but that is your choice.

I have had such success with 50grain V-Max's that I use no other in 22 caliber 50 grain applications. Very explosive and accurate.
