Wiemeraner squirrel dog?
« on: July 21, 2003, 01:08:25 PM »
I have a 7 month old Weimeraner, and I wonder if he would be a good dog to bring into the woods this year when I am hunting for tree rats. How does one start feist dogs to look for/hunt for squirrels? I wonder?????
Cheers,

Willis,

Send me your address via Private Message and I will send you book on Squirrel/Feist Dogs.  They use many different breeds and I would not hesitate to try your Weimaraner, if you are inclined to do so.....

Treeing dog

I guess, you will receive many good suggestions how to teach a dog treeing. While you figure it all out, here are dogs, which start treeing naturally. I mean that 100% of their puppies start treeing by age of 5-10 m. Just take your puppy in woods regularly and turn loose. He will start in due time, find his target game and announce it by loud barking under tree.
Go to my web sites http://www.montanamarketplace.com/wsl/index.html
and http://www.laikabreeds.mulstiservers.com/
These are best naturally treeing dogs in the world.

I think he is getting the hang of it. I trapped a few in havahart traps and got him excited about them. then I let them loose in the yard and he went nuts. I praised him for it, and I am trying to trap more to get him on it. those lakitas sound awesome, but if I brought another dog home, he would stay and I would not!
We'll see. I'll let you guys know.
Cheers,

I was thinking along the same lines, only the 2 YO Weim my sister is getting for me from a client(she's a professional handler) is just finishing the last leg of her American Hunter title.
I know it's would probably tweak her client worse than letting her get knocked up by a mutt to use her for such purpose, but fact is I shoot a lot more squirrels than Partridge.
I figure, iI could get her to work the bushyaills to my side of the tree for a smackdown with a 16Gr JSB Exact  at 890 out of the Axsor and, of course retrieve them).
