1/2 Scale Mountain Howitzer on a Pack Carriage
« on: June 29, 2011, 05:02:09 PM »
I like the Mountain Howitzer, I know it's a kind of plain looking tube but I like it anyway, the last one I built was 1/4 scale on a prairie carriage. Double D did a post about Civil War Cannons in Montana a while back and showed a mountain howitzer at Big Hole Battlefield that is on a Pack Carriage and it inspired me for my next build. I got the book  on the pack carriage (no.25) from AOP via Hansen Wheel and it is worth every penny I paid. Here are a few pics of the stock so far. Still have plenty to do. I don't have a black powder can for scale so I threw in a pop can.

Here are some pics of the barrel, turned out of solid 4" 1018 with the trunnions welded on, I added some stampings to the muzzle to kind of personalize it and on the left trunnion the town of manufacture, the 26 is the weight of tube, D.J.S. is the inspector (me) and the D.S. & Co. is also me. I hope putting 2011 on it for the date doesn't break any rules, the No. 4 of course is for my fourth barrel I've made.

rustychips,
The trunnion pockets look oversized for the trunnion size.  Is that the case?  Why?

Hi Zulu, you a right they are bored big that's for the (I'm not sure what you call it) the bottom part of the cap square, the trunnions are 1.375" in diameter and the bottom piece will have an O.D. of 1.875" with a 1.385" bore. This is not the part for the 1/2 scale but it shows the reason for the oversize hole.

rustychips,
I have not the ability or equipment to "machine" wood.  It would really be an asset to be able to do that.
Your work looks great!

David,
Your barrel looks fine and the pack carriage is coming along nicely. The carriage hardware you're talking about are called trunnion plates.
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

Hi all, spent the better part of Friday rough cutting, jointing, planing and finish ripping and crosscutting oak for the felloes, spokes and nave, not much to show but a
couple of stacks of wood, also had to glue up some pieces for the hubs, 4" square oak is not the easiest to find. In my original post I stated that the cannon DD took
pics of was on a pack carriage, I was wrong it is on a Type 2 Prairie Carriage which I found out was from a modified pack carriage.
