Pierced primers?
« on: July 10, 2011, 06:31:32 PM »
Shooting the old Topper barrel in .22 Hornet on the SB1, getting pierced primers with small pistol primers, hadn't any trouble with this while trying the small rifle primers. Is this common for the SB1 frame? Is it dangerous?

Yup, been reported many times before, I got cratered SP primers, but SR primers work fine. It's not a good idea to continue shooting it if it's piercing the primers, if you take a look at the angle the firing pin is slanted right up towards your face and consider the Hornet operates at over 40kpsi, that's a lot of high pressure gas and debris that's dangerous enough that can make for a bad day shooting and it's not going to make the firing pin last very long either.  :-\

I concur with Tim.

Small rifle primers are what you want to use.   They are made for higher pressures than what small pistol primers are made for.

Had the same problem with my 357 mag/max.  Go with the SR primers.  Hope you don't have too many loaded up with SP. :)
