Too many mail-order options to rely on Wally World's half empty shelves. Pretty good 22WMR selection, other than that, nothing to see there folks.

So true.  My store almost never has what I want even when it is a common caliber.

 I use a search engine called ammoseek. It's a whole lot cheaper to buy on the internet, including the shipping, than it is to stock up at walmart. Every now and then I will buy 22 lr in bricks from local. But for the most part they never have the particular one I want so I just stock up on them when they are in stock where I'm ordering centerfire from.

The exorbitant "hazardous materials" shipping fees kill any bargain prices I ever find on mail order ammo.   I'll find 9mm or .40 S&W for a dollar or so a box cheaper than my LGS but then they have to charge me $12.99 to ship it to me... So much for savings.     The only thing I mail order is .280 Rem because I can not find it locally.

Not sure what you mean by that, but ammo doesn't require haz-mat fees (primer and powders do - though I've heard that is set to expire in 2014). 


All in all though, it depends on your local options.  Online doesn't beat my local gunshop by $1 a box - they typically beat them by close to 50% per box (no lie - the cheapest I can find 9mm Makarov locally is $22/box).  Heck even Wal-mart wants around $17 per box of 50 .32acp around here which I can find for $12/box online.  Figure that in and as long as you're buying more than 4 or 5 boxes at a time, and its cheaper to buy online. 


Only thing I do buy locally (always) is powder and primers.  They're still overpriced, but the $25 haz-mat fee (in addition to shipping) really does make it hard to make up unless buying in great volume.  If their haz-mat status DOES expire in 2014 though that will certainly change.

Volume is key! Order the max amount of powder or primers that can be shipped under one haz mat fee and it works out cheaper. At my age I may not live long enough to use 32# of one type of powder,------------------but my heirs might. It might even be damn hard to come by in the future.

I love the .270. 

Have to agree with you on that one.   Bought my first 270 Win in the early 70's new, a Ruger 77R.   It killed a lot of mule deer and elk for me out to long ranges, and never ruined excessive meat because it was capable of well placed shots at all the ranges I shot it.   It was certainly a Jack O'Connor thing (I grew up reading his writings in Outdoor Life and his books in the 50's and 60's) that turned me to the 270 instead of a 30-06 like the others in my family were shooting.   I gave up nothing to them and even took more game.   The other 270's I bought later are all long gone, but I still have that Ruger even though I stopped hunting big game many, many years ago.

What's not to love? I fell into an incredible deal on my rifle but I won't drift the thread any further so in keeping with the thread the 270 is readily available 280 is not.

Here's the thing: a 0.284"/140gr bullet is great while a 0.277"/130gr bullet stinks - all loaded on the same case? That argument is weak. On the other hand I'll grant you the 280 is just as good - not knocking it, how could I? Of course you probably can't find it at Wal-Mart!
