Lee minie or REAL
« on: December 29, 2003, 08:44:32 AM »
I received a Rem 700 50 caliber for Christmas. I would like to try either the Lee minie or Real bullets. Anyone tried either or would care to make recommendations? I don't hunt, so the shooting will be target and plinking.

I am somewhat familiar with muzzleloaders I have 3 sidelock 50s and 3 revolvers, but this is my first inline. All of my shooting has been with balls. I have 777, Pyrodex, and Goex Clear Shot.

Besides of puting anti seize on the breach plug is there anything else I should be aware of when shooting the inline compared to the sidelocks?

Be sure to thoroughly clean the internals of that bolt after any shooting sessions.

You should probably slug your bore to determine it's actual measurements and then make a choice of bullet accordingly.  An overpowder buffer might help accuracy with either bullet you are considering.

I found the PRBullet.com 400 grain Ultimate 1 conicals shot very well in my Remington.

I have had great luck with the REAL bullet and since you are plinking Casting is the way to go. I am not disagreeing with underclocked as I am sure that is a great bullet for hunting but would be pricy for shooting targets with. I would try a LEE REAL first and see for a 20 dollar bill or less the mould is not that expensive to try and if you do not like it I am sure you could sell it to some on in your area. Jim
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

If ya do much long range target shooting with heavy conicals I would suggest getting a good recoil pad. Has anyone tried the Limbsaver butt pad.Says its sposed to eliminate most of the felt recoil. Make sure you keep the bolt clean.  The one I had would hang up after about 15 rounds. If you mount a scope on it, make a scope protector out of leather. Big time blowby at primmer(Randy has a nice picture). Also get your self a couple range rods. My 2 piece rod broke trying to load some tight sabots. I don't mean to rain on your parade. Have fun with your new rifle!

I have the 250 grain REAL on order. I noticed the funky 209 nipple when I got the rifle and saw the blowby picture posted. To convert this gun to standard percussion caps do I need to just get the nipple from Remington, or do I also need to make changes to the bolt/firing pin?

I shoot reduced charges and usually only have the target set out at 50-75 yards so the recoil shouldn't be a problem. Also, except for initial sightin, I don't shoot from the bench.

I would think that with my low powered loads and the percusion cap nipple I should be able to eliminate most of the problems that everyone has with the full powered hunting loads. I guess I will find out.

The 320 grain REAL is "probably" the better choice.  But, who knows?

I have a Limbsaver pre-fit pad for my Encore that didn't fit well at all.  Lots of pad hanging over the edges of the stock.  E-mailed Limbsaver about the quality of the fit and never got a response.  I'm not impressed with the pad or the company.  Hope they are reading this.

Can I just replace the 209 nipple with the #11 percussion cap nipple or do I need to make changes with the bolt/firing pin? Is the #11 nipple a standard size?

Oops, I think I have misread your question - I was taking you the other direction.  You want to go from 209 to #11 - correct?  Then yes, all you should need do is replace the nipple.  I do not know if that nipple HAS to be replaced with the Remington nipple or if some other would work. It is a 1/4x28 thread.

I'll contact Remington and order a #11 nipple from them. Since the gun is new and under warranty I don't want to give them any excusses for not covering any malfuctions by using aftermarket stuff.

I bought a 700 about 4 years ago and had a lot of trouble with #11 caps.  Went to Hot Shot nipples etc and still had hangfires.  Traded it to a buddy that converted it to musket caps and the hangfire problem was solved.  If your going to primer down go to the musket cap.... jmho

Lee REAL    I've had that mold for 15 years and have tried the bullets in every ML I have owned.  Never could get it to shoot good groups past 75 yards, but still hoping.

Hi vinconco;   :D You said you couldn/t get REL bullets to shoot well in every ML you have owned the 250's or the 320's?  Also what ML's have you tried them in? I haven't had any luck with the 320's in my TC Bl. Dia. 50 cal. or my 50 cal. NEF Huntsman

Docux;
I have tried them (both) in several euro trash 1 -48s' , the TC 209 x 50 1-28" , Remington 700,  Traditions .50 1-48".   They were good up to about 75 yards then the accuracy started falling off rapidly.
