Have you measured the bore?  It could be an old black power cartridge gun, like a 44-40 or something.

It is 41 Rimfire. Not a powerful round for today, but it killed by infection back in the day it was popular. Dillinger himself had one on him when he was arrested.

I read once many a Southern and Western law man shot himself with one when it dropped out his pocket and hit on the hammer. True or not who knows but it seems alot were toted back in the day.

This style pistol was always a very dangerous gun to the owner.  When ever you loaded the pistol you HAD TO MAKE SURE THE GUN WAS AT 1/2 COCK SAFETY POSITION.  If you closed the action with the hammer down it would fire.  I had one in 38 special that I sold to a friend.  He in turn sold it to another fella and didn't tell him about the danger of closing the action with the hammer down and he shot himself through the hand when he closed the action.
If you are serious about selling this one send me a PM.
