Replacement N1911 Barrel
«

Gentelmen:
I own a M1911 Remington-Rand that my Father-in-Law carried through WW II, Korea and Viet Nam.
This is an "as-issued" gun and I really want to keep it that way but I enjoy shooting it too. I have a good load and the pistol performs very well. The trouble is that the barrel is lightly rusted and leads to a certain degree.
I don't want or need to buy a $150 barrel from Brownells. I want another as-issued barrel if I can find one.. Any ideas?
Good evening,
Forrest

FA-
I see tons of GI barrels at the gun shows I attend. The prices are quite reasonable. Do a search on the net for gun shows in driving distance of your residence. Bet you find what you're looking for at a reasonable price. It's not a bad idea to pick up some spare parts as well, especially extractors.

Go to Gun Parts Corporation - can be found in the Shotgun News or on their
www.gunparts.com
(?) website. Mil-surp bbls, the likes of which would have replaced the one in that pistol at the hands of any unit armorer, are usually around $50. Hope this helps. Mikey.

The beauty of buying at a gun show is that you can look through dozens of barrels and pick the best one. Not to mention, they usually go for less than $30!

Savage,
S: The beauty of buying at a gun show is..
F: Sure. A gun show is wonderful. On the other hand they only come to my town once or possibly twice per year.
Mike: I went to the site you prvoided and found it to be out of service. The was no real location for M1911 parts as such, just general catagories of the general stuff we are interested in. I looked around some but didn't find a source for barrels other than specialty items for modern production pistols.
I'll have to keep looking.

If there is a gunsmith in your area, he most likely has a cigar box or two of 1911 parts and barrels.

Savage,
S: If there is a gunsmith in your area, he..
F: Sure, I've already checked the gunsmiths in this town. They have plenty of bolt guns.. no M1911 parts.
This is the primary reason I showed up here: I hope
someone
might have a site where I could just go buy a GI barrel.

Well----------if you do a search, I bet you can find a barrel pretty quick. I did just that and found one on E-bay item #3651002146 current bid is $1.25 plus $5.00 shipping. Then there's
www.gunhoo.com
and a host of others. You might want to consider an aftermarket barrel for shooting and keeping the original for show.

Looks like they're out of stock on the one you want, which is a High Standard, fourth from the top of the list.

Savage,
S: Well, if you do a search, I bet..
F: OK, I went to eBay and bid the barrel you found. Thanks for the referance and help.
By the time I looked the bids had gone up to $50. I bid anyway. We'll see how it comes out.

Jack,
I don't know why I didn't just
go
to Numrich in the first place. I know that place.
If the eBay bid doesn't work out, I'll buy one from them.

FAsmus,
Even if the bore on the original barrel is dark, I'd still keep it in the event you would like to put it back in all original condition. I can't think of the name of it right now, but there is a bore cleaning paste that works wonders on old barrels. Good luck with your auction. Now I remember, JB's Bore Cleaning Compound.

Savage,
S: Even if the bore on the original barrel is dark..
F: Sure, I never toss stuff that might have further use later on.
The current barrel is only slightly rough and lightly pitted. I have not used it all that much since my Father-in-Law gave it to me but these days of sub-zero weather sees me up to the indoor range more than usual and the M1911 is along.
As I've fired it through these last couple weeks and several hundred rounds the barrel is becoming smoother through use and leads very little: I have to spend only 4 - 6 minutes with Ed's Red to remove all traces of lead.
It is becoming such a small problem that I may not bother shelling out another $60 to $80 for another barrel.
The eBay barrel went to $60 today + shipping and I'm not right in the mood to go back and up the ante at this time.
Yesterday at the indoor range I fired 7 rounds off a crude rest into one small ragged hole at 50 feet. The slight leading certainly does not affect the accuracy of this M1911.
Good afternoon,
Forrest

FAsmus,
The only military barrels I have seen that were unservicable in the 1911s were damaged by the use of corrosive ammo. A dedicated IPSC shooter might eventually shoot one out, but most 1911 barrels will serve the casual shooter a couple of lifetimes! If you're shooting lead, it might just last forever.

Savage,
S: The only military barrels I have seen that were unservicable..
F: The current barrel in my pistol is slightly pitted and rough (rusty) from neglect by the previous owner. I just wanted a slick new one if the price wasn't too high.
The performance is excellent as reported above so I'll be shooting it as is for now. It really is getting better th emore I shoot it: Less leading each time out.
