Can a 45/70 barrel be used on a SB-1 frame?

It will work fine at trapdoor load levels.

You MIGHT getaway with it for really LOW pressure loadings but if it ever had a warmer load put in it it may suffer terminal structural failure. Note all this would happen inches from your face.

IMHO not worth the risk considering the price of an SB2 receiver or even a complete rifle, it would be cheaper than your insurance co-pay for a new face!

Be safe

The H&R model 155 Shikari was available in 45-70 and 44 mag, it used a cast iron frame very similar to modern SB1 frames,  so it would be fine with any SAAMI spec 45-70 round.

Yes. Like Tim says, keep it at trapdoor levels and enjoy the rifle. ;)
45-70 was a factory chambering for years on a cast iron frame so I'm not sure why some folks think the gun will blow up into tiny pieces and tear your face off. ::)
22 Hornet, 357 mag/max, 44mag, 30-30, 45LC, 45-70... would all be good candidates for an SB1 frame. The most important thing is to use some common sense if you're reloading for them.

I have a 22" 45/70 barrel on a SB1 frame that I use to shoot substitute BPCR loads.  I would not have a problem shooting factory ammo with it, but I don't because I have other 45 cal rifles.  I am concerned about the what if's of someone else getting the gun down the road and putting hot handloads in it, but as already mentioned you can buy a used Shikari and put a hot round in it if you don't know any better.

OK I stand corrected, I am just a bit overcautious that is why i sought out an SB2 for my 44 shortie, just a bigger margin for error.

Thanks

Steve,

Caution with guns and reloading is a good thing.  And at some point you will fall under Pete's influence and ream your 44 to 445 SM and you will need the SB2 for that rig.  ;)

They do work surprisingly well, dont they  ;D ,
Even so, my SS model can use the Marlin level loads and with the scope and MC/RP lam stock is just plain comfortable doing it. Its a nice option to have, but my steel and paper targets really dont know why.

I see no need for anything more powerful.  I'd rather have fun than take the beating.
