cannon build
« on: July 01, 2011, 03:33:53 AM »
I need to build a cannon for work.
Need to shoot around 1500 pingpong balls.
Short range, max dispurtion area.  Can't get helicoptor to drop from this year.

My thoughts are two air cylinders, 12" dia, 4 feet long.
3 or 4 inch gal iron fittings, 6" barrel, may need 8" to eliminate need for 2nd shot.

Does this sound workable?  May just get a large compressor, if I can find one with a large enough fitting.
Selonoid valve would be preferable if one will pass enough air.
Will be mounted on the back of a John Deere Gator.

Anyone with any good information or links to other forums I would appreciate it.

ps needs to be ready for first Sat in August.

Sounds very doable. Pingpong balls have no weight. So they will not go far after leaving the barrel. A little exstra barrel length will help pick up speed. The higher they go. The more they will spread out. Also a rag or toilet paper wad will help. We shoot candy out of a mortar. It spreads out well. But the key is getting it high. When shooting candy. The candy is put in a piece of leather. Putting the pingpong balls in a piece of cloth might help. Sounds like a fun project.
