Mossberg O/Us?
« on: December 03, 2009, 05:14:30 AM »
I'm in the market for a decent but not expensive O/U made in ladies/youth size and noticed that Mossberg has one for about $550 new. I'd pay that much. I've handled the Mossbergs when they first came out and they appeared to be well made. Do you know if there's a verdict yet about their reliability and durability and operation?

Thanks.

They look good and they feel good. On my advice my friend Barry in PA bought one in 20 gauge. He had nothing but trouble with it from day one. It doubled on him almost every time he shot it as I recall. He gave up on it and traded it on a CZ and has been happy ever since.

That's a sample of one and might or might not reflect a genuine problem with the design or might have just been a problem with his gun. I dunno. Since then tho I don't recommend them to folks any longer. The CZ guns are not a lot more expensive I've owned several of them and do recommend them. DeHaan also imports the same Huglu made guns but dresses them a bit more nicely.

I don't own one but haven't heard a good thing about them and that's not good.I think the remington spr's are actually a better gun mechanically.Alot of people like them,a friend of mine's son has a savage 512 he likes real well and they are in that price range.I have a stoeger 20 ga I bought from a guy private and so far it works well. You can find the stoegers and spr's easily under 450-500.

Don't own one myself, no real interest in doubles, but a friend has had Silver Reserve o/u for several years; no probs at all, loves it dearly and recommends to anyone who'll listen.

Several others have purchased on his advice and most have had good reports; only complaints have been about fit, not function.

I've had a Silver Reserve for a couple of years. It was hard to open when new. I polished where it was rubbing.. No other problems.. Had about 1000 rounds through it without a hitch.... Not bad for the less than $600 bucks out the door.

The two Mossbergs that have showed up at our local skeet field have both had problems with the trigger systems. I'm a firm believer that you really do get what you pay for in an o/u. But that doesn't mean you need to buy a $15K Krieghoff. I've had really good luck with Brownings, My first Citori has had at least 30,000 rounds thru it with not a single problem, and then I went to a 425 citori w/Briley tube set.
