any one own one?? theres an old man who lives by me and was freinds with my paw paw before hr died last year. he used to be a machinist and built custom rifles until he recently found out he had brain cancer and ive been giving him shots ect. and visiting him. more recently we went to the range together and played with a few guns, my handi for one which he was impressed with the accuracy. hes shown me a few of the custom rifles hes built over the years most ranging from $5k to $14k premium wood and gold inlays custom engraving ect. and if any of you have a 2002 or a 2007 gun digest hes published in both. i find these guns to be amazing beauty wise and accuracy. but one has sparked my intrest its a 1903 springfeild in 30 40 krag and wondering had any one converted a handi to one?

Mornin,
 Yup, there are a few .30 Army handi's floatin' around. It's a good platform for the handi too!

IMHO a better option than a 30-30 IMP...  ::)

I also have a 30/30 rechambered to a 30/40 Krag. It has shown a preference for 220 grain Hornady RN's and IMR4350. I've also had good luck with Hornady 165 grain SST's. It might get a workout this fall on cow elk. Actually, I'll be doing the work carrying it. Hopefully, its work will be short.

I've played with the 30-40, but only in several US Krag rifles and carbines.  THE load for those I've shot has been 220 Hornady round nose and IMR 4350 to give 2100 fps, which duplicates the original military loading and seems to be quite suited to the Krag.  A couple of 'em were rebarreled with new barrels, drilled and tapped and scoped, and both shot little "bug hole" groups at a hundred yards with the load.
I'm interested in your comment about a 1903 Model Springfield chambered to 30-40.  Are you absolutely sure that it's a 1903, or a US Model 1896 or 1898 Krag made in 1903?  I've got several "low number" 1903's, and have contemplated making a 30-30 or a 30-40, but then reconsider when I realize that I can dowload the .30-06 or shoot cast and get the same performance, and lower pressures in deference to the early '03's heat treat "problem".
I think that were I to come across the "right" Handi .30-30, it'd be a .30-40 in about two shakes of a lamb's tail!
I told my pap and mam I was going to be a mountain man; acted like they was gut-shot. "Make your life go here, son. Here's where the people is. Them mountains is for Indians and wild men." I have a 30-30 barrel getting re chambered to a 30-40 right now. Found news cases at Midway and next week I'm ordering
dies. A friend has a Krag that I shot last spring and decided the 30-40 was for me. Shot a few cast loads and 180 and 220 jacketed
loads. Hopefully It'll be back home in a couple of weeks, and then the fun will begin.

I have a 30-40 Handi barrel and it's a doozey (it was a rechamber from a 30-30). I recieved my 30-40 Krag barrel as a gift through the generosity and friendship of our own fine member AtlLaw (thanks buddy!!). It shoots great and is very accurate with the factory ammo I have fired through it. I highly recommend the caliber in a Handi. Try it, you'll like it!!! It is a great caliber for the wooded forests of the northeast and I'm sure it would make a great hog gun as well....<><....:)

Ive shot cloverleaf 3, and sometimes almost that, 5 shot groups at 50yd., casual rest, from two '98 Krags using GC 180ish gr. old Lyman mould RN over 16.0 gr. of IMR4227 just loafin' along at maybe 1350fps. The long 218ish gr. GC bullet is a great long range number, but not needed for most shooting (there is a reason the military changed the 30-06 spec cartridge to a lighter bullet). IIRC, the 1:12 twist was determined to be 'the most accurate' but initially the military had spec.ed a 220gr., thus the 1:10 twist became 'the standard'.
FWIW, since you can use 'pointy' bullets in a single shot and can load the 30-30 up decently in the H&R platform I wouldnt rechamber one in 30-30, it will do all I need (YMMV  ;)).

I've got a Ruger #3 in 30-40, and I love it. I load 170 gr 30-30 bullets out to 3" OAL and it shoots 1-11/2" groups @ 100 yds.
The 170 gr bullet hits @ 100 yds like a 30-30 @ the muzzle! Bang, plop! It also handles cast bullets very well.

Have a couple of Model 95 Winchesters in 30-40.  Dad carried one of them for probably the last 50 years he was able to hunt.  Very good round for deer, elk and bear.  Course he was an excellent hunter and fine shot which tends to make a difference.

I'd like to find a Handy bbl cut to this calibre but suspect I'll have to find a 30-30 and do a rechamber.  Complete rifle would be the best.
