Can anyone tell me anything about this gun? It is a 12 gauge double barrel muzzle loading shot gun given to me by my father,and it was given to him by his father. The only markings on the gun are the words Real Twist.

That definately is a beauty, Wish I had one like it, do you still shoot it or is it a wall hanger.

I am neither a gunsmith nor an officiando of older weapons - but I have heard that Damascus twist barrels aren't too safe to shoot. I might be wrong, but I would hang it until you consulted a gunsmith.

Damascus bbls can be perfectly safe, but as mentioned above, get it checked. There is something romantic about damascus steel.

What a wonderful piece! i love twist barrels as they were called. they are safe after being checked out by a gunsmith. it looks to be in pristine condition. what a beautiful old gun. the cracker barrel resteraunt in my town has an old double barrel like yours (but not nearly as nice!) i asked to buy it but they refused. i guess i,ll keep looking.

Nice looking gun! Have you disassembled it? There may be more information on the bottom of the barrels. Might be able to push out the wedge in the forearm and lift the barrels. Another place to find information is on the inside of the locks.

Some close up photos of the locks might help.

My dad used to put 3 or 4 rounds through it a year,and I have shot it, when I was younger. It has not been fired in around 7 years now. I have had it apart looking for some clue as to the manufacturer but there is nothing anywhere on the gun other than the previously stated. Ihave never had the lockplate off but I will pop it open and look inside. Thanks again.

:grin: Its your gun,and you can do with it as you like. If it was mine,I would have it checked out by a good gunsmith. A lot of these old bbl Damascus type twisty thingies are still able to shoot if checked out properly with black powder shells( you load em). It would be a thrill to knock a Grouse down with that old girl,or a Woodcock or two. Stay safe.........King
