Can one put 10/32 thread into a .250"diameter rod?

Can one put put a female 10/32 thread into a .250 inch diameter brass or steel rod?10/32 is the thread on many accoutrements that I have.
I'm trying to make a ramrod for a muzzleloading pistol.The existing "ramrod" is merely a .250" wooden dowel.

I have a 10-32 tap drill as a #21 which is 0.159" before tapping.  Now you have a 1/4 inch rod  0.250" minus 0.159"= 0.091/2 = .0455" wall thickness......not much wall left???  Are you sure about the size of your wooden ramrod originally?  Any chance you could bump it up with aluminum or steel?

Instead of drilling and tapping the quarter inch rod, why not epoxy a brass end cap threaded for 10/32 thread over the end of another wooden dowel.  

You may be able to find an end cap with a small enough inside diameter to not need much filler material and will still allow the dowel to fit in the barrel thimbles of the pistol without the cap rubbing against the end of the muzzle, or if it sticks out a little it will be fine, just a little darker over time.

General rule of thumb is you want a wall thickness equal to the raduis of the whole.  I think a 10-32 has a diameter of .190 so you want a wall thickness of .095.  With your set-up the wall thickness would be .03, that is pretty thin.

Actually, the difference between the major and minor diameter of the thread is .180-.159= .021".......  This isn't much but it adds to the stength of the rod.   Dewey uses an 8X32 thread on their cleaning rods and uses an adapter that is only 3/16 ",  not much metal.  But this is a cleaning rod not a ram rod.    I'm confused why you only need a 1/4" rod for a muzzle loader.   The smallest ML that I know of is 32 cal which is about 5/16" dia.  Pistol calibers are usually larger.  Perhaps you could make an adapter from 10X32 female to 8X32 male and drill and tap your ramrod with 8X32 instead...........FWIW    Don

I'd prefer to use a metal rod[steel or brass] in that,they're also historically correct,as well as being stronger than wood.I-may-[for field use],be able to thin down a  pre-existing[capped/threaded]5/16"super rod" to .250,so it will fit the existing ramrod channel.The barrel is pinned on,so I can't see how much clearance might be available[if I wanted to use a thicker rod].

Why not bell one end and turn the other down and thread (male) to 10-32?  Female threaded buttons are available and the belled end can the cupped to fit the ball.

There are adapters out there that you can put on a rod to make a 10x32 jag to fit a rod with 8x32 and vise-versa.  You can make them your self.

My"lathe" is a hand held 3/8"electric drill.When I reduced/shaped "super-rods"before,I inserted the new rod into the drill and held abrasive paper against the now rotating rod.Crude technique but it works.
