La Caruna 1953 mauser
« on: May 21, 2011, 08:30:53 AM »
Well I feel really stoopid now that I have solved the scope base problem. I dug out some old Weaver bases for a 98 and tried them. Work like a charm! Now I have the scope mounted and need to see about headspacing.

Thanks for all the help.

I got a good deal on a La Caruna 1953 Mauser (M44, maybe?) with a bull barrel in 22-250 ackley improved, a ram line stock and timey trigger. Low round count. It has been drilled and tapped for bases but when I mount my Leupold 2piece bases I cannot close the bolt. The rear base protrudes into the cut the bolt must travel through to close.

Any suggestions on scope bases that will let me mount on receiver a varmint scope?

That 22/250Ackly is a high pressure round & the Spaniards were famous/infamous for the soft steel in those LaCaronas.  Have the receiver hardness tested.  Test it under the feed ramp on the bottom of the receiver.  It needs to be at least 30 on the "C" scale.
Try to look unimportant.   Your enemy might be low on ammo.

Also check to see if your mount screws are too long.
