Raccoons without dogs?
« on: January 03, 2004, 11:17:09 AM »
Anyone here successfully hunt coon without a dog? I was wondering if I could glean any advice as to this method. I used to hunt with a houndman, but due to development, he no longer hunts. I know that there are plenty of 'coon around, but chasing them with a dog is pretty much out of the question. Not to mention, I don't own a dog.

So any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Ive had good luck hunting coons after dark using a Johnny Steward cassette caller. Have even used a boom box on ocasion. Dennis Kirks Coon Puppies tape has worked best for me. Use alot of volume and they will come right to the caller. If you live in a state that allows using lights you got it made.Dennis Kirk also has a book on hunting racoons I would also recomend.GOOD LUCK!

When I was younger we would walk through the woods and see them in the trees all the time.  Not sure if you can hunt during the day where you are but they were very easy to find.  We mostly hunted the swamps edge close to some firm ground close to New Orleans.
