While browsing though internet cannon photos I came across a Russian made seacoast cannon and couldn't help noticing the strong Krupp design influence. Attached is a link to photos of this cannon.  Dom

That actually is an interesting site, I just did some exploring and there is a section on muzzelloading cannon

So what is the function of the two rods under the cannon?

My bet is recoil guides, and travel limiters.  The flat and narrow rolling surface with those small flat profile wheels would allow the gun to jump its tracks fairly easily.

Cool!  He has some photos of the howitzers at Ft. Ross!  Because they sit inside you get a really nasty echo off the buildings and stockade.  I think for salutes they use 4 oz. of FFg.
