My two #1s
« on: February 08, 2011, 03:52:21 PM »
So I started with a handi a few years ago, collected some extra barrels and told my wife that whichever one of these barrels wears out first, I want that in a Ruger #1 one day. Well, the poor girl has no patience. She MADE me get a 1-V in 22-250. Meanwhile I pick up a LH Savage 270 bolt gun from a LH guy in the office; had to, its LH. Enjoy the handi, should enjoy the bolt gun but its so long that I bang it on shooting house roofs and its just hard to love. Surfing gunporn at night, I develope a horrible lust for an RSI. Tell the wife that I wouldn't mind having a 30-06 one day.. She says "you mean you don't have an AUGHT gun now, everybody needs and AUGHT gun, you gotta get one now". Show her some Ruger RSI gunporn.  She makes me order an AUGHT RSI the next day.

Deer season comes and I am trying to play with all these toys. I realize that the only way to create a lasting relationship with these #1's is to forsake all others. So I sell off all the handi barrels, and all the scopes that went with them, traded off all the brass, find a kid to adopt the original 30-30 handi, sell the LH Savage to another LH guy in the office. Now I am down to two #1s, forsaking all others. Created some good hunting memories with the 22-250 and the 30-06 this fall, but now the eye is wandering.

Problem is everytime I think a certain gun looks interesting, I start a thought process of "for a little more, I could get..." that seems to always converge at the answer of a #1 in either 22-250 or 30-06.

What's the diagnosis? Surely I can't be suffering from complete satisfaction with my #1s.

The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

those rsis are beautys!! I need to get one someday soon myself. Id love one in 7x57. Your 22250 and 06 like you said will handle about any hunting chores. If  i had to add to that id tell you a 4570 #1 would round out your collection nicely.

I agree, there's something about the Number 1 in 45/70.

The RSI in 7x57 gets a bad rap for accuracy, but someone recently posted (maybe one of you) that the answer was heavy bullets.

The thing you first notice about the RSI is its length; its shorter than a 10/22 carbine, and half a foot shorter than the SYN/SS Mags my buddies have.

I have tried to want a 45/70. I just never get past the thought that my 30-06 will do all that. What am I missing?

Some fun basically.  ;D Yea, the 30-06 will do all that, but it would do all your 7mm does as well, but you don't want to think like that do you?  ;)

I don't have a 7x57; I was just saying it gets a bad rap for accuracy.

I share your fondness of number 1's to an extent altho I have others. The 1 is my all time favorite single shot. I'd like to have one but just don't know what caliber. Dad has a 7mag now that I claim. Want something heavy now... Safari-iish

#1's are just plain cool.  I've owned three....a 243 that I stupidly sold and replaced with a MKII Ultralite (POS)...had it rebarreled by Shaw so it at least shoots 1moa groups.....a 35Whelen 1s that would not fire (some kinda unfixable defect - they gave me my $$ back) and, a 1s in 45/70 that will be buried with me in my coffin!!!

470 anything???????  yeeeeeeooooooooo!

Now, I have some cast boolit for the 45/70 that run about 550grains and I can't imagine wanting to shoot anything bigger/heavier then one of those with a stiff load in a #1 - 45/70.

Oh man, even thinking of it hurts!

Keep em coming!

Wasn't miserably hot today, so I stopped by the house and picked up my two #1's for a trip to the range after work.

Plan to start out deer season in November with a scopeless 1-RSI 30-06.
Went to zero it with a new load today.
First two shots at 100 yards with factory irons were touching!
RSI's are supposed to be able to do that.
Can't wait for November.

1-V 22-250 had the forearm touching the barrel. I put a shim between the wood and the hanger to get the barrel to float.
Jury is out on that. Going to try some of my other loads before I decide if that was a good idea.
Still fun to shoot even when its fussy.

PowPow,

The forend on a #1 can be glassed & floated.  Have done it a number of times and it works fine.
