Dirty Harry and Other Old Flicks
« on: July 18, 2011, 08:20:26 AM »
My wife has been turning the tube on more and more lately - we caught the last half of Run Silent Run Deep the other night.  What a great film - great cast and everyone was in the right role.  Even the Japanese officers looked good.  What really sticks in my mind was last week, one of the Dirty Harry films, the one where the dirtballs have kidnapped the mayor and are holding him in the abandoned Alcatraz.  You would think with the mayor kidnapped the whole police department would respond, but no, it was up to Harry and the lady cop played by Tyn Daly.  We only saw a few minutes but I think she gets killed at the end.  It wasn't one of my favorite films, but it was strange seeing Clint Eastwood so young, and wearing those fruity '70s styles.  He had on bell bottoms!  The Smith & Wesson was featured prominently.

The crime movies from the 70s just had a hard edge you don't see anymore.  I thought Bullitt was great at the time, and I remember one called The Seven Ups, very similar, lots of fast driving and deadly gunfights.  I'm not sure they would sit right with me today - too shallow and trashy.

Are there any actors today that can convincingly play a role like that? I don't know. Don't watch many movies. Are there even any actors around that have cultivated a tough guy image?

Death Wish with Charles Bronson comes to mind. Definitely a good vs. evil story. But it was made back when good and evil were in contrast with one another. Today the concepts don't seem to have much weight.

Don't discount the B movies, like the immortal Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!

Low budget, but fun to watch.

Those can't be old.  I remember going to see them at the drivein in my '63 T-Bird.  Except for Run Silent Run Deep.  That one is old by my standards.

I also remember M29s going for 500 dollars because of "Harry",  the Harry tax.

I don't know about movies, but Michael Chiklis plays a GREAT role in The Shield.  Ran for 7 years.  Not a show for the faint of heart, and like most shows got a little over the top the last couple of seasons.  That 1st season was....wow.  One thing I've noticed is that most of the actors these days are "pretty" instead of manly.  Just chalk it up to the Feminization of America.
This that I do, I do by my own free will.

That was a great movie, I thought no one else saw it but me.  The music was really great too, wish I had the soundtrack.

With the current trend in Movies today.  I would not be suprised if they don't remake Dirty Harry.  They remade Conan and Foot loose.  10 to 15 years ago they remade the Getaway.   What other movies was Ali MacGraw in?  She was a looker.
Hey if they remake Dirty Harry what would the gun be?  the 500 S&W?  Or the classic 44?
Hey three years ago when Gavin Newsome was the Mayor, if hhe were kidnapped I believe only one or two cops would be looking for him.

Yep, great movie. The era of questioning authority, good guys= bad guys; bad guys= good guys. Much like Easyrider, Vanishing Point ( also re-made about 10 years ago for TV, not bad ), etc.
A little Robert Blake trivia, I just watched "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre", and watched the "special features". Guess who played the yound Mexican kid who sold Humphrey Bogart his winning lottery ticket???? Yep, Robert Blake.

amc was playing deathwish movies a few weeks ago.  i watched them just for kicks...the acting, storyline, and action were horrendous.   but what i did especially enjoy was in deathwish 3, he goes in to get his mail, and the bad guys punch his girlfriend out, put the car in drive, and send it down the hill where it crashes into something and ends in a firey explosion.   charlie runs out, looks at it for a second or two, and then just casually walks off like it wasnt no thing.   that scene alone made it worth suffering through the mess.

Anyone ever see Two Lane Blacktop with James Taylor? It's about two guys driving cross country in a hot rod 55 Chevy. Always loved the movie California Kid with Martin Sheen too. The car in that movie still has me drooling!

Warren Oates of course. :) Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys was the mechanic. I'd love to see that movie again. I'll have to see if I can find it on DVD on line and buy a copy. I loved Vanishing Point too.

I've never understood the notion that a gun must last forever. If you need to get a new dove gun, just go buy one. Sell the old one. Somebody will want it.  How old does a shotgun today need to be to be unusable for steel, 30 years old maybe? Except maybe a few low grade or very high grade guns? My Browning BPS pump gun works with steel and it's about 30 years old. Just about anything with interchangeable chokes should be OK.

But when you do switch to steel, test your ammo well. Using the cheapo ammo is not the way to go, unless it has improved dramatically in the past few years. I tried steel on pheasants and it was totally unsatisfactory. I never had a clean kill with one. Switching back to lead made a big difference. Almost all clean instant kills.

My question about lead for doves is whether it's suitable at all. The pattern density is OK for big birds, but I have a hard time believing that most of the steel loads available will be adequate against these small birds.

I'd like to know what non-lead loads might work for doves. If you've got any info, will you please post it?

We have been using steel shot for quail for a while nad the 7's seem to work.  Expensive but work.  The Trap and skeet range around the corner steel is all we can use and while extremely expensive for 4 rounds of skeet (about $100 for the four rounds with ammo) the 7 shot breaks the birds well and downs quail.  You are not going to get the super high birds that the lead 7.5 bring down.  But the steel works like say 9 shot with a pattern of 6's.
The reason we went to Steel shot in the first place was the water fowel was picking up the 2 to 4 shot to use in their gizzerd and grind up their food.  When you see doves out in a field and it looks like they are eating dirt they are, they are picking up different small pebbles to use to grind up the grains nad seeds they eat.  If they are picking up the small to use, and it is having the same effect on the egg formation of the birds then I can see going to the steel shot.  If not, then this is another way to add expense to hunting and a way for the state to add fees and more importantly fines.
