Removing rust from the bore of my bolt action 30-06???
« on: January 04, 2004, 03:38:00 PM »
I just realized my 06 has rust in the barrel. I don't know why, I take good care of my guns and oil them before storage. Is their anyway I can remove it myself without the help of a gun smith? Thanks.

Terry1,
I know the sickening feeling you must have felt when you first saw the rusty bore..........I would try J&B Bore Compound along with Kroil penetrating oil.  I know that Brownell's sells the two as a kit on page 238 #55 Catalog.  1-800-741-0015.  I would NOT try using a power driven cleaning rod, just use a quality one-piece steel cleaning rod together with a bore alignment/muzzle guard and you should be OK.  If you call them, they can recommend what would work best and be safest.  Good Luck!

Terry,
Second thoughts on this rusting......

Do you have any idea what may have caused the rusting?  Did you use  military surplus ammo with corrosive primers?  After you've get the rust out, you may want to think on this long and hard to figure what caused this.
If you have a storage issue with dampness, I would suggest inspecting all your firearms thoroughly now, and if you find rust anywhere else you'd better get after it with a vengeance!  I use 4-ought (0000)steel wool and gun oil to rub the rust away.  Were you storing your gun in a soft case?  Was it in a closet or locker without proper air movement and something to absorb moisture?  Finally, I would recommend that you use a good coating of vasoline petroleum jelly in the bore and wiped over the exposed steel for storage.

If the rust is the result of corrosively primed ammo the bore will need to be cleaned with a water based solvent.  Hoppes is petroleum based and will NOT remove the salts which are the corrosive in corrosive priming.  I use Sweets 7.62 but even glass cleaner will work..aviod the sented kinds.   For outside a firearm in long term storage I use wax.  It doesn't wash or rub off and will stop rust cold.  The easiest way to apply is a spray material called RustPreventIt.  for bores I suppose I'm a bit old fashioned but prefer RIG GunGrease or, for extended storage, cosmoline.  The last product is available from Brownells and works quite well,  even used by the US military (among others) for long term storage..  I use 0000 (4 ought) steel fur wrapped around a worn (too small) brush.  Lub this with a fine oil such as ATF fluid or even WD40.  Push it bach and forth in the bore will leave the bore shiney and clean.  I DO NOT reccomend this as a cleaning method.  It is an extreme method for an extreme problem.  To kill the rust in the bottom of the tiny pits which are sure to remain I apply Brownells OxphoBlue with a patch after cleaning with solvent.  This material phosphatizes(sp.) the remaining rust in the bottooms of the pits  and it's action is permanently stopped.  If left it can resume it's activity after being fired and allowed to sit.  The moisture collects under the fouling and it starts again.  Be really sure the bore is cleaned and clear before firing it again or severe damage might result to the rifle...
