Soldier Who Lost Right Hand in Afghanistan Receives Medal of Honor
Quote
President Obama on Tuesday bestowed the Medal of Honor on an soldier from Santa Fe who saved the lives of his fellow troops in Afghanistan by grabbing a grenade and throwing it back at his attackers -- an act of valor that cost him his right hand.

Army Sgt. 1st Class Leroy Petry becomes only the second living veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to receive the military's highest honor
.

Quote
Medal of Honor citation

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty:

Staff Sergeant Leroy A. Petry distinguished himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty in action with an armed enemy in the vicinity of Paktya Province, Afghanistan, on May 26, 2008. As a Weapons Squad Leader with D Company, 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Staff Sergeant Petry moved to clear the courtyard of a house that potentially contained high-value combatants. While crossing the courtyard, Staff Sergeant Petry and another Ranger were engaged and wounded by automatic weapons fire from enemy fighters. Still under enemy fire, and wounded in both legs, Staff Sergeant Petry led the other Ranger to cover. He then reported the situation and engaged the enemy with a hand grenade, providing suppression as another Ranger moved to his position. The enemy quickly responded by maneuvering closer and throwing grenades. The first grenade explosion knocked his two fellow Rangers to the ground and wounded both with shrapnel. A second grenade then landed only a few feet away from them. Instantly realizing the danger, Staff Sergeant Petry, unhesitatingly and with complete disregard for his safety, deliberately and selflessly moved forward, picked up the grenade, and in an effort to clear the immediate threat, threw the grenade away from his fellow Rangers. As he was releasing the grenade it detonated, amputating his right hand at the wrist and further injuring him with multiple shrapnel wounds. Although picking up and throwing the live grenade grievously wounded Staff Sergeant Petry, his gallant act undeniably saved his fellow Rangers from being severely wounded or killed. Despite the severity of his wounds, Staff Sergeant Petry continued to maintain the presence of mind to place a tourniquet on his right wrist before communicating the situation by radio in order to coordinate support for himself and his fellow wounded Rangers. Staff Sergeant Petry's extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service, and reflect great credit upon himself, 75th Ranger Regiment, and the United States Army.[8]

Looks like one more:

A corporal, a freakin’ USMC CORPORAL sized up the situation right at the start of the operation, and when things went north, took on the mantle of leadership and command, ordering around sergeants, cursing officers, doing the job of extracting friendly troops and killing hostiles.

Yeah, just an average days work.

But, Color me cynical, but I find it a bit strange that this rather anti-military POTUS is starting to hand out MoH about a year before a general election.

Mind, I don’t begrudge the recipients the MoH, but something tells me that in a year, when His Nibs again runs against George Bush, we will be treated to “Let me be clear, I support the troops. Look at how many MoH I gave out. How many did George Bush give out in 8 years?”

That was one great read!
It's in situations like this, that the Hero's become evident. So many  times the word hero has been cheapened by society. At my Grandsons graduation this year, I heard a student during a speech, call their teacher a hero! A roll model perhaps, but not a hero...........This young Marine was (IS) a TRUE HERO.
Freedom Of Speech.....Once we lose it, every other freedom will follow.

I was in the 300 person studio audience when Leroy appeared on Jon Stewart. Seemed like the nicest most humble guy ever. Had a lot of great things to say about Obama.  Bunch of guys from the Pentagon in the audience and they were wildly cheerly Leroy and laughing at Jon's jokes. What I thought was odd was that Leroy had 3 bodyguards. Like he needed them?

Egg-sackly!  Not to mention here in the States, and especially in the presence of the august majesty of Mr. Jon he doesn't have his gear.
