what's the twist rate for a Rossi .357?
« on: January 04, 2004, 04:21:21 PM »
I've got a Rossi model '92 chambered in .357mag.  I pushed a patched jag through the barrel and I know the twist is slower than 1:24 inches.

I noticed the Winchester '94s and Marlin '94s list a 1:16" twist on their websites.  Why is mine so slow?  Or why is theirs so fast?

Mine performs about like one would expect with 158 grain bullets - faster the better.  So I've found several suitable "hunting loads" quickly.

But it's the plinking rounds that are eluding me.  Too weak and the 158 grainers key-hole.  So I'm thinking maybe a 125 grain bullet will tolerate a slow twist at more moderate velocities.

So far I've tried a 125 grain truncated cone bullet.  Works good for 25 yard plinking but the groups open up by 50 yards.

Next I've tried Lee's new 125 grain RNFP.  I don't know what Lee was thinking but the crimping cannelure is set so the 125 grain bullet seats as deep at the 158 grain bullet.  That means the overall length when loaded on a .38spl case is way to short to feed well.

I'd really like to find a light load that feeds well using .38 spl cases.  Any suggestions?
