   the .327 Federal Magnum? 
 
      Two or three years ago, I went into the little local gunshop, and asked the lady (owner) behind the counter to show me a Ruger SP101 in .357.   She pulled one out in .327 Mag, and said that this was all they carried the Ruger in now, "because everyone wants one and everyone is asking for one!"
 
      I replied, "What happened?  Did they discover that the .45, .40, .357 and .38 don't work anymore?" 
 
    She frowned and I left.

At which point you should have said not everyone, I guess I`ll have to find a gun shop that has what I want, and turned and walked out.

After reading all the gunwriter's hype when it first came out I was sorely tempted to throw away my .45's and .357/.38's!!!  In retrospect I'm glad I didn't as they still seem to be quite adequate for my purposes.
 
Be interesting to see if anyone is still chambering it ten years from now.

I don't really want a pencil sized pill to throw, but I think Federal's biggest mistake wasn't allowing brass manufacturers and reloading die makers access to this case.  I know a lot of guys that bought them, but it's too expensive to shoot much.  My one friend loves his in a compact Taurus revolver he wears CCW, but he admits he doesn't practice enough due to the cost.  I know a lot of reloaders are using H&R 32 Magnum Dies and setting them out.  I just think Federal should have given Lee or RCBS rights to make dies and a couple companies rights to make the brass.  Probably would have come down a lot differently.  I wouldn't own one personally as I'm a big bore fan, but others might have given it more of a shot.

I just bought one a week or so ago.  A 3" sp101.  I would have rather had the same gun in 357, but I got a deal on this gun I couldn't resist.  I have actually been pretty impressed with it so far.  The bullets expand well and penetrate pretty deep.  I like it better than a 38 special, and the muzzle flash at night is a lot less than my Beretta 92 9mm.  I got a fair amount of ammo with the gun, and that is a good thing because the price of ammo is pretty bad. 

I have thought about trying to trade it for the same gun in 357, but I doubt anybody would take me up on that. 

I feel comfortable in using the 327 in a self defense situation on 2 leged critters, but I think I would prefer a 357 for the woods.  Those little bullets do seem to penetrate really well, though. 

One positive side is that the 32 longs are very mild, and the smaller diameter of the bullet should cause less meat damage on grouse. 

I did not know about the reloading die situation.  I have been thinking about getting dies if I decide to keep this gun.  I wonder what kind of success people have been having by using 32h&r mag dies?

I seem to have two S&W's---loud as the voice of God. Fun shooter- Bounces quiet a bit. Would like it in a 4/5/6 barrel.
Thinking about  call S&W and see if they would rebarrel it in a 5 incher.

Nothing wrong with the 327 FM . if you want a little more than a 38 spl and not near as much as a 357 mag. Cost of ammo is a factor , mine gets alot of 32 HRM .
