what primer for 45-70? 325gr ftx ?
« on: July 10, 2011, 06:06:06 PM »
just wondering what the general concensus is on primers for the 45-70. im ready to reload some but i am unsure of what primer to use. i have some cci 200's, cci 250, and WLRM's. i noticed a few loads with federal 210 primers, are thes better.  Also im loading the hornady 325 ftx bullets. do i need a different stem for my rcbs dies to seat properly? just wondering if that rubbery tip causes the bullets to vary in seating depth? thanks in advance
what part of "shall not be infringed" dont you understand???

As to which primer to use depends on what powder you intend to use. If you are using a BALL powder it is recommended that you use Magnum Large Rifle. If it is stick powder then standard LR primers will work OK. But you can use Magnum primers with either powder as long as you are working up your loads from a start load. Different primers will create different pressure curves with the same powder charge. Primer makes do make a difference in the accuracy of a load but there is no way to tell which one is the best because only you can determine that in YOUR weapon with YOUR components used. I have never loaded the FTX bullets so I can't help you with your question.

Yep, you need a different nose punch on that seater for pointy bullets. Maybe you have one in another die set you arent using much; as long as it fits the bullet nose decently the caliber shouldnt matter (and as long as the threads match the die, etc.).

You will need a different seating stem for the FTX bullet.  Call RCBS (1-800-533-5000) and they will send you one at no charge.

When I first started reloading  (this time around) I started loading both the 444 & 45/70 with the 265gr & 325gr FTX. I bought Hornady dies for them so they loaded just fine. To your question I use the Winchester Large Rifle Primers. I used the load data right off the Hornady site.
