Stocks.......
« on: July 27, 2011, 04:07:44 PM »
Guys,

I don't post here much, but read quite a bit.  Lots of good information.

A couple weeks ago I saw the link that Boyds had the thumbhole stocks for H&R handi rifles in stock.  I ordered one of the Brown/Brown thumbholes since they seem to be tough to find.  I noticed as soon as I ordered the stock, there weren't anymore available.

My plan was to switch the standard stock on my hornet (it comes with open sights) with the thumbhole stock. I've got a Nikon ProStaff with low rings on the hornet and standard stock is too low for a good check weld.  I thought the thumbhole would be a better fit, but it is no better than the standard stock.

So, I ordered one of the Choate monte carlo checkered stocks.  It seems to fit the scoped hornet much better.  I also ordered the checkered forestock.  Not sure about the barrel dimensions on the hornet versus other handi rifle barrels, but the forestock does not fit!  I'm going to give Choate a call tomorrow.

I'll probably keep the thumbhole for my kids youth 243?

Has anyone else had fit issues with the checkered forestock?  I can't even get it on the fore end with the barrel on the rifle.  I'd have to shave the curved part for the forestock bolt lug to match the forestock.  Plus the hornet barrel doesn't fit the front part of the forestock (the barrel is narrower than the forestock).  Thanks.

Eric

Sounds like you just ran in to the same problem as me. You must have an old narrow Topper barrel. You need an old narrow channel forend.

Could be a Superlight barrel too if you mean the forend channel is too big, ALL H&R forends have pretty much the same barrel channel except some made for shotguns, there will just be a bit more space around the lighter contoured barrels. If it's too small, sounds like a defective forend, I have about 8 or 10 of the checkered syn stock sets, I swap em all the time on all H&R rifle barrels, they all fit regardless of the barrel contour, just not as tight to the barrel on the Superlights.

Dave, I have a checkered syn stock set on my M158 Topper barreled SB2 Handi, it works just fine, nice and light compared to a modern barrel.  ;)

IF you have the H&R 22 Hornet, pre 1987, then the new forestock will not work w/o modifications.  Learned this the hard way with my friends 258 HandyGun II in 357 Mag when we broke off the forestock stud.  :o

Numrich MIGHT have an older forestock as they still have a few of the older barrels and other parts from back in the day.  However, searching for a part on Numrich's website is a good way to get a headache. :P

Guys,

Thanks for the posts/info.  I bought my hornet last year, so I don't think it's an older model (unless it was sitting around for years?)  The problem with the forestock is it just won't fit on the barrel when it's in the frame.  The hole for the barrel lug is too far forward for the forestock to fit in to place.  I'll have to measure the diameter of the barrel where it would fit into the forestock.  The checkered one is wider than the standard one that came with the rifle when I bought it.  I'll measure tomorrow and post.  Thanks!

Defective forend or a mis-positioned forend stud?  ???

Guys,

As a test, I tried the fore end on my girls youth 243.  It barely fit.   Looks like the hole in the forestock is just a touch too far forward.   I took my dremel and removed some composite on the bottom of the hole (about 1/16", maybe not even that much) and was able to get the stock on the 243 and on the hornet.  The profile of the hornet barrel must be narrower as there is a slight gap on either side of the barrel at the end of the forestock.  I'm not worried about that.  Thanks!

Did you by chance get a survivor forend? When I ordered my daughters light 7-08 barrel I wanted the survivor forend for it, and it was recammended by H&R not to since it wouldn't fit properly (looks only I believe) due to it having such a light barrel. We went with the regular synthetic and all was fine.
Good luck-  thejanitor

thejanitor,

No, I ordered the Choate checkered forend.  I'm guessing the hornet barrel and my girls youth 243 have a slightly smaller barrel taper than a standard handi barrel.  Thanks.

Sorry Eric- I thought Choate was just the company name that made all types of synthetics for H&R, I still have a lot to learn.  Hope you can figure it out -cheaply.   thejanitor
