Lawyers and Ruger Customer Service

I have had a Ruger SBH that I bought back in the late sixties early seventies, and while changing out the rear sight blade I never even saw the spring fly south. After crawling around on my hands and knees for awhile and dragging a magnet across the cement floor I gave up and called Ruger Customer Service. When I explained my need the first question from the rep. was has the safety conversion system been done to it? No it has not. Then we can not sell parts for it was the reply. That SUCKS. It has not had nor ever will have there conversion on this old three screw and right now I am considering USFA and Colt as the only residence in my safe! Fortunately I have found a spring at my local gunsmiths shop. But what when I need other parts if ever?

I could (almost) understand them not doing any factory work on an old model without doing the conversion, but refusing to sell you a spring for the rear sight seems extreme to say the least!
 
At any rate, I believe they send back the old parts to you when they do a conversion so you can 
 
"re-convert" it yourself.
Brownell's may be a source for future parts needs.  They carry a lot of factory parts - without looking I'm not sure what they have for Rugers.

like spruce said its no big deal. If you ask they will return the old parts and you can put it right back to normal in a few minutes .

Thanks guys. I was not aware of that. I have no issue with the transfer bar system and find it a benefit to use at times as with loading six rounds. They are a lower cost, extremely strong action allowing for many conversions and upgrades for the custom that many want including myself. I am glad that I do not have to end the relationship. I will continue to keep my old three screw from being converted as there are other options, but if push comes to shove, it is good to know.

That must be a new Ruger policy.  They've never refused to sell me any parts.  Brownell's has just about every part for all models of Rugers so lately I mostly order from them, faster too.

Wonder how it would have gone if your would have just said yes? You know, make no waves, answer the questions the way you know they want them answered and make it easy for them to help you.

The line of questioning lead me to believe that answering yes to the conversion was the right way to go. The next question was, what is the serial number? It took only a moment to find that the SBH had not been done. No amount of discussion was going to get parts at that point. The cost of sending it in alone is ridiculous and only done if really needed. It seems that policy has been changed and Ruger is feeling pressure from some source other than their customers.

I just called Ruger about a mo ago to et an ejector rod, housing , spring and screw. Gave the lady my ser number and she said the gun was so old it wasn't in her data base . She ask if it had new mod bh on it or not and that was it.

It might be just that simple . I was thinking that the guns in the puter are made after the puter came on line and older ones were going to have to be entered by hand (expensive) and just had not been done. Bet there is a log to look them up in but the nice lady that helped me didn't want to do it.

  Rather than get upset at Ruger, get that frustration at those that cannot accept responsability for their own ignornace.  It's strictly a CYA policy.    Plenty of sources for parts anyways.

Yes it does and that might be why no hassel . But she didn't ask alot either. Maybe I got an under achiver  ;D

I do understand them not doing any factory work on an old model without doing the conversion.

I don't agree with Ruger on that, my I understand it. 
 
The reason the New Model exist is Ruger's protection against idiots and lawyers that will sue them if another idiot hurts someone while handling and Old Model.  To sell a part (even a spring) that puts an Old Model in working order, is the same as them selling an Old Model. 
 
Can't you just hear the attorney in court blaming Ruger? 
 
I love Ruger until the changed to the New Model and started labeling the metal parts with those stupid warnings. 
 
If I had the money, I'd get a Colt, but I don't, so I just fantsize about the 4 clicks and the half-cock loading and the only true perfect mating of a gun to a hand.

As mentioned, the new transfer bar system is not at all a bad thing and gives the user the option of six chambers. Something that has rarely happened in my old model. I just finished a Vaquero that has had extensive work and is almost as smooth as my SBH, but not quite. Is newer always better? Seems that big brother is going to protect us no matter what we want. Has USFA gone to the bar system? Or Colt?
