Caught By Pet Hog
« on: April 06, 2011, 01:15:27 PM »
I have this great mule footed hog that I raised since he was about 40lbs, and he is over 220lbs. now. The other day he got out and lured him back to the pen with a piece of bread. I got in the pen (I've done it at least a hundred times), and repaired his escape route. As I was walking out he nudged me really hard on my right leg, he is always playing around hitting me with his head looking for a pat. Well this time I had short pants on and I just ignored it, but I smelled him musk and that caused me a little concern. When I got out of the pen my little boy screamed "dad your leg". I looked down and saw blue black colored blood spurting out. It happened so quick I did not know I'd been hit. I have been around feral hogs since I was 10yoa, and have been caught at least twice. To make a long story short, I went to the hospital, got about 40 stiches and had a vein cauterized. My lesson learned is that a feral hog is as unpredicaple as a so-called pet lion or tiger,  they can hurt you in a heart beat. Next time I have to deal with him I will not be as casual. But I have no bad feelings toward him, he was doing what all wild animals do when they are confined.

Oh- thats what I did wrong in TX... I used corn in the trap.   Bread would have had them coming in.

In all seriousness you are probably quite lucky. Dad on the farm didn't trust sows either but boars he had a big piece of plywood or a big shovel with him at all times when he was in the pen.  Also my 4th grade teachers husband fell in the pig pen, they figure he had a heart attack, there was little left of him when they found him.... be careful.   thejanitor

Pigs are fed.  Hogs are eaten.  And yes, quite right, pigs DO make good bacon (and pork chops, and ribs, and hams)!   ;)

40 stitches :o  blue/black blood?!?  :o :o  Zombie sort of stuff.  Glad you are OK.  How did your son handle it in the end?  Sounds like a cool head there.

Thanks Land_Owner, my 13 yoa son kinda took control and when we went inside the house he put a compress of gause on the leg and called my wife who was coming back from work. She is a nurse, and during that time we could not get the bleeding controled. I told my boy to rap it again and just sit on my leg till moma get's home , he did a great job. I am a late life dad and my wife gave me a child when she was 45, and I have to thank both of them for a job well done.

My mom used to be a nurse and she stop the bleeding and i learned when i woman is not in the mood, it means leave her alone.

I think back to when I was staying with my Grandpa.  He always had hogs, would pen up the sows whenh they were getting ready to have little ones.  Then he would keep her penned till they were weaned.  He never went into the pen without a club, and he kept a close eye on them at all times.  Seems he had been knocked down and hurt back in his younger days, and either a brother or cousin had been killed by hogs.

While in Turkey I got called by a local land owner to come and kill hogs.  A bunch of wild hogs had gotten into his orchards, and was destroying things.  Several of his workers had tried to run them out and one had been killed, ripped apart and partially devoured.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

After reading someone them(one they ate a little girl that fell into a train car full of them) i am not going near pigs, hogs, or anything in the Suidae family with out a 44mag handgun and up.

Hawkenman ,

Given the amount of feces in a pig pen, and the depth of that gash, and tear in an artery, you are VERY lucky that you did not get a serious case of blood poisoning!  Sometimes, they can't cure it, even with antibiotics.

    P.S.- Kill that hog.  TODAY.

Thanks mannyrock and the other guys, this particular hog is a mule footed hog. His hoof or feet are not split but solid like a mule or horse. He got out agian last week for about three days and never left the yard. When I would go outside I carried my son's little league baseball bat. I had to use it once to give him an attitude adjustment but I finally got back in to his re-enforced pen. I want to breed him with other feral sows hoping some of them will come out mule footed. But anyway the hog and I are doing fine.

You are a lucky man to have a son so late in life, I am sure you love him very much, but the hog may love him more one day!
I would have had that hog over the BBQ pit by the end of the week had he done that to me.
