44 mag loads

just had some 44 mag given to me and not sure if okay for my handi?? 158 frame ss starts with ay#######  240 bullet 4227 power gr. 23  & blu dot 240 bullet gr. 17.5 new the H & R's just want to be safe....

I think if I read correctly that the ammo was given to you,  if that's the case I don't make it a habit to shoot other people's handloads. (especially one's given away) I'd have to really trust the source!  That being said,  Lyman lists 15.5 gr. as max for Blue Dot.  Definitely a NO GO from me.

I'd pull the bullets and reuse the components minus the powder, there's no reason to use them as they are and risk hurting yourself or the rifle.  ;)

I understand you have a 44 mag Handi... If It was born around 2008 or new I would scrap those, go to Wal-Mart and get me a box of the 240 grain Winchester white box's and start shooting tiny groups at 100 yards and killing about anything you want to!

Take Quick's advice and disassemble the "gifted" ammo.  I wouldn't even keep the primers.  I have been given over a 1,000 rounds of handloaded ammo in the last 2 years and have pulled all the bullets, dumped the powder and primers.  If the brass isn't too ugly or the bullet too mangled then I will reload them, if not they all go bye-bye.  I have pulled bullets and found;
 
no powder
compressed loads of pistol powder in 45 ACP
duplex smokeless loads
triplex smokeless loads :o
and many other things that just ain't right.
 
You only got one trigger finger and one dominant eye so be careful.

There has been a couple threads here about loading lately that frankly scare the crap out of me. Sometime I even pull bullets on my own reloads if they happen to be put in a non labeled container... just because I don't want my kids to shoot them if we don't know for sure what they are. I DO NOT shoot anyone elses handloads anymore* they could be the most expensive shells you ever shoot. (*the man who taught me moved away and he was the only one I would be completely confident they were done right if I wasn't there to see them loaded.)
So thank the friend who thought of you with the gift it was nice of them, but pull them.

I DO NOT shoot other people's reloads PERIOD.

I always recommend others follow the same advice. I know one guy who used to work with my cousin and he blew up at least a half dozen guys I'm aware of most of them not his as he often reloaded for others. He didn't even know the basics of reloading and seldom worried about what kinda powder he used or how much of it. That he hasn't killed himself or others is a miracle.

Never trust a reload you didn't load yourself.

that is really good advise my son gave some 38 specials a while back ill pull the bullets on them tomorrow.never shot anybody's reloads just my own have been reloading since i was 17 in 1965.

Had a friend bring me a box of 30/30 reloads someone had given him, said the first shot kicked the snot out him and wanted me to check them.  First thing, two different primers.  Next, pulled the bullets, 150's and 170's.  Eyeballed each powder charge, had some cases nearly full of some kind of fine grained powder such as might be found in pistol powder.  Others had a very short charge, not even 1/3 full, of some kind of stick grained powder.  I think the idiot that loaded them must have been cleaning his loading bench, a real candidate for the Darwin award.  Just hope he doesn't take someone else out.  Goatwhiskers

DON'T SHOOT THE AMMO!
 
It just ain't worth the risk... plain and simple. It only takes one mistake by whoever loaded it and you're gonna pay the price for it. Check out the post a while back about the fella blowing his fingers off. :(
 
Like Tim said... pull the bullets and reuse the components.
