Field Photo With Discussion - Comrade Shelter
« on: August 03, 2011, 05:12:57 AM »
Huts like this were all over the land, abandoned.  We figured the people walked until the found a spot with good mojo, built the hut and then discovered that the sight might have had mojo, but no water nearby.  Brilliant.  If none of this makes sense, let me explain.

In 2000 Zimbabwe experienced a wave of land seizures.  They didn't always target whites, just anyone Mugabe didn't like.  ZANU political party (the only game in town) was in charge.  First the Zanu boss, "Hitler" Hunzvi (he picked the nickname) took over the war vet organization by having his thugs beat up the head of the group, an ex-brigadier.  Once he controlled it, Mugabe approved a pension (pay off) to anyone Hunzvi approved, many teenagers.  Of course, the Rhodesian Civil War had occurred 20 years earlier. Zanu then rounded up the poorest people and started settling them on confiscated land - farms, game ranches (conservancies), etc.  The most productive land was thereby dedicated to raising cattle with no scientific methods, much as it had been a hundred years ago.  It's not surprising the country collapsed.

Last night I tried to run a post with six pictures, but until the new server is completely up they can only go in one per post, so I ran six posts, many without much discussion.  I'll be putting six more in today but I'll try to make it a little clearer.

smoking in bed would be discouraged. Cooking close to the house would have its problems also.
