Hy Hunter .22 getting shot again.
« on: May 10, 2011, 04:44:52 AM »
I picked up these old Hy Hunter Western Marshall .22s on Gunbroker several years ago.  They are a full sized gun, made from some 'mystery metal' with steel inserts for the chanbers and barrel.  Apparently that was their way of making a full sized gun in .22 without becomming overly heavy.  They were very cheap at that time and I had never shot them with live ammo.  They served as practice guns when I was performing with the Christian Cowboys, getting shot with blanks and dropped in the dirt occasionally when I tried spinning.  So now that I am no longer doing that, I wanted to try to shoot these and see if they were any good.  Which was a difficult thing to since I had shortened the barrels with a hacksaw for balance and that also removed the front sight.  Well I was able to lock them down on the bench and found that one shoots well and the other will be a parts gun.  So now I have cut a new front sight slot (with a dremmel) and replaced the sight on the best shooting gun.  I took it to the range for an initial test and found the barrel to be loose.  So now that is taken care of I need to get back to the range (hopefully today) and file it down a little for elevation and cut the narrow 'V' rear to a square cut.  Then if it shoots well enough maybe a little powder coat to replace the long lost finish.  This is the pair before replacing the sight, I'll get an after pic in a little bit.  44 Man

I have a friend named "Hy Hunter", I rebuilt one of those .22s for him a few yrs. ago.  It shoots great, he tells me.  Since then he's found a Hy Hunter .44 mag says it shoots great also.  I think i still have a frame and a barrel for the .22.  Yours look good with those grips.

Very nice and ditto on gcrank1's remark about you having a project gun around.

My thoughts go back several decades to where I could not shoot my handgun accurately with the sights so I spent a full year shooting instinctive. Suprisingly, ya get better than you think!

Now a day's, I would do the same with your work on the sights (read probably would have someone do this for me). Good Project!

Yup!  I DO have projectitis!  I can't stand to have a gun around that isn't shooting!  This one is doing well, just need to file a little more off the 'new' front sight.  44 Man

Let's see, what can I do with the other one?  It needs recrowned, maybe I'll have to make it a 3 1/2" barrel?  :)

Those guns were made in Germany by JP Sauer& Sohn. The importer later became Hawes. The guns have metal lined cylinders and barrels because the gun is made of a pot metal and could not hold up if not lined. Hy-Hunter was the company that had them and they were discontinued in the 60's until picked up by Hawes.

Fairshake, if I remember correctly the Hawes and Hy Hunter were in the gun stores simutainiously.  Hy Hunter was a distributor that had Sauer put his name on them.  The Herrters 'Power Mag' series was also built by them, the steel large bore guns are excellent quality.  I had a hard time decided between a Ruger Blackhawk and Hawes as the Hawes was $78 and the Ruger was $87!  The Ruger won because of wanting to hunt and the adjustable sights, back then I didn't understand how to dial in a fixed sight handgun.  My .44 mag Hy Hunter was built in '73.  She was very well 'finish worn' when I got her.  She's wearing the one piece wood grips from my .22 EEA Bounty Hunter which fit perfectly.  It looks to me as if the Eaa series of guns came from the old machining but with a Ruger licenced transfer bar system.  They even have the same markings on the bottom of the barrel as my old Hy Hunter.  44 Man

Fairshake, I apologize and stand corrected, I just ran across info that did say that Hy Hunter was the first importer, then Hawes.  I must have seen left over Hy Hunters along side the Hawes.  Thanks for the info.  I've been trying now to find the web site where I got the date of manufacture of the .44, so I can date the .22, it is a much lower number.  But I can't seem to find that site again!  44 Man

Gcrank, I can remember things from 30/40 years ago pretty well, what I can't remember is where I put things yesterday!  I could find them easier if I could find my glasses, they're around here somewhere......  probably with my car keys whereever those are.   :)  44 Man

Hi 44 man.  I have one of these 22 also. From my dad's collection. Took it to the range last week and it was all over the place.  Found a loose barrel when I tore it down to clean it.  How do you Tighten the barrel on these revolvers?

This gun has a lot of sentimental value to me, it's the earliest memory of a firearm that my father owned, and was the very first revolver that I ever fired.  By the serial number it's only four years younger than me. Any help would be appreciated.

Urt, I found my barrel loose when I went to sight it in also.  I just used a little locktite on the threads.  You don't need the red stuff, the blue will work just fine.  I also had to do that to an old Colt Scout .22 that I used to own.  (wish I still had that one!)  Hope you get your gun shoot well for you.  I'm having a ball with mine!  44 Man
