Taters planted in the fall
« on: July 28, 2011, 06:18:12 AM »
We dug up the volunteer taters we "planted" last fall. Nice ones and quite well ahead of the ones we planted this spring. I may just do that on purpose this fall.

I guess it's kinda like storing them in the root cellar.  only easier.

Cornbelt, did you plant the seed "taters" whole? How deep relative to your ground freeze depth? Thanks, ear

They just didn't get dug up last fall. The mulch was heavy, so the 18" frost rule of thumb for around here probably didn't apply, and it wasn't too bad of a winter anyhow. They were Youkon Gold, and they were only about 6-8 inches below ground level. The mulch was about 6" when we put it on, but not much left by spring, so I tilled around the plants and put on more.

I might as well try that with a tater patch I'm not happy with.  I was planning to just turn the soil and mulch heavy anyway, so if I leave the taters in place (what few were made)  I might just save on seed for next year.
