SXS question?
« on: January 05, 2004, 12:34:36 AM »
I was browsing through the local Bass Pro Shop yesterday, and saw a Stoger 12 gauge SXS shotgun. It had 26" barrels, double triggers, tang safety, and screw in imp. and mod. choke tubes. Wood to metal fit was not the greatest, but the blueing was nice, and the stock had a pleasing grain to it. The price was only about $350. The guy behind the counter couldn't tell me much about it. The action sounded nice and solid when I snapped it shut. Most inexpensive doubles that I've looked at have that clinky "Mattel" sound when you close them. It shouldered well, and felt good to me. If anyone knows about the quality of these shotguns, or if anyone has one, I'd appreciate any comments you have. Thanks.

SXS question?

I have owned two of them. First was a 28 ga. I bought because the dealer seemed to never be able to get me a 20 ga. He finally got the 20 in for me before I ever fired a shot from the 28 so we just swapped back. The grip on the 28 felt a bit large and clunky to my hands. Otherwise it was a nice gun.

My current 20 ga. is much more slim in the wrist and really feels good. So far I've only used it for CAS matches but it feels good for wingshooting and I do plan to use it that way.

Both of mine exhibited good quality of workmanship and seem a super buy for the price. My 20 was a bit stiff when I first got it and I used a bit of JB Bore Paste on the mating parts and opened and closed the action a whole buncha times. It really smoothed up nicely and is a gun that has found a home with me.

I'm not sure if the one I have is the same as the one you looked at  but I have a 12ga Stoeger Uplander SXS.  I bought it from a guy I used to work with.  I wasn't really interested in it at first, kinda thought it was a cheap gun, but he needed the money and talked me into buying it for $100.  It turned out to be one of the best $100 I ever spent.  I use it all the time now and to be honest it is quickly becoming one of my favorite guns.  I haven't had any problems with it yet and it seems to shoot well.  I would recommend buying one if the price is right.
