What's the best way to kill rust in the bottom of pits.

A reverse electrolisis setup will convert red rust, (ferris oxide) to black rust (feric oxide). The latter is soft and easily brushed away..  or just use OxphoBlue a cold bluing solution sold by Brownells. It is in esencially a cold parkerizing colution and the rust at the bottom of a pitt will be stopped.

some people don`t like to use it but I found Naval Jelly works good also

naval jelly is made to remove rust but always remember it is also a great blue remover and leaves steel totally unprotected. If any gets on blued steel it will no longer be blued!

is there any way to nuetralize rust on the inside of a barrel?

A penetrating oil called Kroil will get beneath the rust and loosen it so that a brush can remoev it. Of course the pit is still there and that means it is still collecting metal and powder fouling.. If the pits are truly small they can sometimes be smoothed out a bit by lead lapping. Some have had success with fire lapping, which is where bullets charged with abrasive powders are fired down the bore. The problem with that is that it can and often does produce wear in the throat first and that's a bad thing.. Perhaps the best thing to do with a pitted bore is to keep it clean. Layers of bullet metal and powder fouling will hold moisture which is certain to further the rust damage..

thanks gunnut69 my stupid brother in law let his new 760 rust to heck and back. Hope it will still hit the broad side of a barn. The same brother in law that let his cousin use his blr and didn't check the bore which was plugged with mud. When he shot it it blew a hole behind the front sight and a huge swell.

Kroil mixed with baking soda applied with a patch wrapped around a brass or nylon bore brush works , a patck made out of silk works also when soaked with kriol.
