Bore-Lapping with paper patched projectiles: benefit or not?
« on: August 21, 2011, 10:29:33 AM »
Dear Sir,
After reading your pamphlet on bore-lapping, and thinking about the part where soft bullets shoudl be used as well as the part on bore polishing with patches, i was wondering if the "softer the better" for lapping and making the bore straight is the principle.  Therefore, would there be any benefit to paper patching an undersized bullet up to desired bore size, and impregnating the paper with lapping compound?

Sincerely,
C-

p.s. of cours, i am thinkinng of patching .308 cast projectiles up to .310 for use in this problem rifle ( http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,237809.0.html ), but the question is more broadly applicable, i think.

Paper patch won't work well because the paper won't hold grit when rolled on, nor do very soft or very hard bullets work well.   And for goodness sake don't ever try it with jacketed unless you want a reason to rebarrel a gun, as they will rip the throat out.

Stick with lead bullets at about 12 bhn as prescribed in the instructions.  There are thousands of barrels worth of experiance written into those instructions.   Forget any experimenting.  It's been done to exaustion.

Very good, Sir! Thank you.
OK, no experimenting.

Any suggested commmerical source for the appropriately soft 12 BHN cast projectiles?

Sincerely,

Mt Baldy bullets advertises revolver bullets at 11 bhn. I would imagine they would sell them unsized & unlubed if you asked them to.

Mt Baldy is a good outfit, which I've known and done business with for years.  I don't know that they are using LBT lube any more though, so if you wan't lubed bullets, consider that before you buy, if you want them for high power use, especially.
