Missed my Deer
« on: November 21, 2011, 03:14:54 AM »
Last week was "rushed" for me and it got even worse as an incident at work required me to stay until 8:30 pm on the eve before the hunt.

Things got a little worse as I did not get to bed until 10:00pm and the 1:00am alarm failed to wake me for my 150 mile drive.

By 2:00am, I almost called off the Morning hunt but ended up driving hard and made it to my destination and was in the field before the pre dawn.

(I am done making excuses now)

By 7:05 a younger buck blasted by me as it was being chased by a larger buck. If I said that this larger buck was in the 140's class, it would be an understatement for sure.

The buck presented a frontal shot at a slight angle and despite much investigation, I pulled off a clean miss at something a little under 50 yds with the Dot equipped SBH.

This really rankles me as I should have been able to make that shot easily with even my iron sight.

I really did not feel bad as I was not tired and the like but feel that the weeks events along with the very rushed 14 Hrs before the hunt had caught up with me.

Disappointed as said but the experience of the hunt was great as usual for the next two and a half days. I had the hammer back a few times after this but let the small doe's pass. It is early yet but I will find something that wants to occupy my freezer this winter.

I know I felt really rushed this year.  Took 3 days to just calm down and relax.  Hope you have a good season and take home the venison.

dont feel bad. I once missed a 6 pointer broadside out of a scaffold at 20 yards with a 500 linebaugh!! I dont ever get buck fever anymore but suffer from the other side of it. I get a bit to confident. After shooting i realized i had just pointed the gun and didnt remember even using the sights!

Yeah,Don't feel bad-I missed a Pa. black bear on Monday at 30 yds. ??? Was shooting a 14" Contender in .309 JDJ with a 2x Simmons scope on it. I was gonna switch back to the iron sights on Friday but the season opened on Saturday and sight-in time was not there so the scope was left on..... Guess it happens,I shot off the bench since I got this barrel and did real well with it (or so I thought).

Randy, with all the deer supposed to be in Illinois, I'm surprise there aren't more deer kills posted on the Hunting and Fishing Illinois forum? Here lately, I'm pleased to just be hunting(getting old and feel it!). I'm confident you'll still get yours. Hang in there buddy.

It's OK. A clean miss is fine. A cripple hurts.
I almost missed with mine this morning, same outfit, SBH with a dot. I shot a walking doe at 78 yards but led her ---wellllll, maybe perfect because I hit her in the neck and dumped her so I can't complain. Yet there was only inches to spare.
I have missed at 20 yards by rushing the shot and I just laugh about it.
Only two things count, a clean miss or a dead deer!
