Just picked up a Vanguard S2 in this chambering and wondering if anyone else has one? If so, how does it shoot and any load suggestion?

Got it from Gobles in Ontario. Got 100 Norma brass ordered and 40 Wby brass too.
Trying to decide what rings and bases to use as well as which scope. Was thinking Leupold DD and my 3.5-10 Weaver Grandslam.

Many years ago I rebarreled a Ruger# 1 with a Douglas#3 Premium in that caliber. I don't recall the powder/load. The bullet used was the 85 gr Nosler PT.The few deer I shot with it were all bang flop.

  My 12 yr. old great nephue sure likes my 700 Rem. chambered in .240 Wby...  I took him deer hunting and he shot his first deer with it.
 


  Loaded with 100NP's and given any decent shot it drops them in their tracks...

My hunting buddy picked up a custom 240 WBY built on a 98 Mauser action with a Douglas 24" barrel a few years ago and we played with it for a while. Our findings were that H 4831 and AA 3100 really worked well with 100 gr bullets. Got around 3200 fps with AA 3100 but I am not sure that they make it anymore.  We only worked with 100 gr bullets for deer hunting. We found that the 100 gr Sierra was really accurate but for shots under 150 yards it was a bit too soft for our liking. If you hit the shoulder if really made a mess and did not penetrate very far but did kill every deer in it's tracks. He killed between 10 and 15 deer with it. Nosler partitions were the preferred bullet. There are many better made bullets that are around today with the new bonded cores and mono bullets that I would give a try. We found that the cases COST AN ARM AND A LEG. I think he had to pay something like $1.50 each and that was around 10 years ago. If Nolser will ever come out with an Accubond bullet in 6mm I would give it a try quickly. They really are good bullets. Good luck and good shooting.

  I had Parker Ackley make and put this bbl. on my 700, so i've been shooting it for MANY years.  This isn't it's first deer either.  Anyway, it shoots very good with several different bullets, in fact, many years ago i even won a few bench rest matches with it too.
 
  NP's work well in it for big game, so i'll just stick with them, i like them better than Accubonds, as normally NP's give a bit more penetration than AB's.

       Looks like people have had better luck with theirs than i had with mine. I had a Lazer Mark. Biggest piece of junk i ever owned. 3 trips back to Weatherby and they did nothing but scratch the hell out of the stock and tell me it was that way when they got it. At the time i owned 4 Weatherbys. Sold all of them but my Vangard 270 Win. Only one of the 4 that was reliable.

  I'm not a big Wby. fan either, did you notice my .240 is on a Rem. 700 action???

       Yes i did notice that DM. Everytime i hear the .240 mentioned i go into my anger mode about Weatherby. :-[ >:( :(

 Its a great cartridge, and can even work on elk with the right bullet/shot placement. I have a guy in my congregation that uses a 45-70 as a saddle gun and the .240W for everything else, uses the Hornady 350rn and the Nosler 95 partition respectively. His 13 yr old son shot his first elk last month with the 240, a nice 5x5 around 90yds. One shot, bull stumbled over. I gave a 240W to my Pastor in Texas and he used it to shoot a couple Axis deer (doe/buck) with me in Leakey. It is a gee wiz killer on deer. I like a heavier bullet/cartridge on elk size animals, but it is still a great round.
I had a Mod 700 made up in .240 with a Shilen barrel, just for my only grandson. Since his liberal Mom has never "allowed me" to ever take him plinking, much less hunting ( he's 9 now) I sold the rifle.At least she lets me take him fishing! ha  I now use a BAR .270 for what I used to use the 240 for.
