I do not meant o hijack this thread . but has anyone tried a plastic water bottle   filled with cement . I was thinking of making my next cannon  to shoot them. I have the perfect barrel just need to get the breech material.

I have thought about it in the past. I have plastic water bottle that is a perfect fit in my soda can mortar. I have been leaving it in the mortar to keep dust and other stuff out of it.
I may not be completely sane, but at least I don't think I have the power to influence the weather.

I would assume the water bottle wouldnt travel as far for a few reasons. The added weight and the shape of the bottom of the bottle. Cans have that nice cup shape on the bottom, I'm sure it adds to velocity.

I have a mortar that shoots the 16-20-24 oz soda-pop bottles.  I fill them with either water (light loads) or concrete.  They work very well.  When you shoot two, the leading one always goes much further (as when shooting two golf balls).

There are several different diameters - pick one that you think will be around for some time.

I'll bet that you never thought that Coke and Pepsi were the same caliber!  :o

Must agree with Tim I would try shooting them filled with water first .

Tracy fired a full pop can from his mortar , we all expected it to blow open in the tube but it didnt it flew out and even when it hit the ground it only sprung a small leak ......concrete is such a mess .

When you shoot anything water filled - work up slowly.  There is a point where the hydraulic pressure forces the sides out to touch the bore, then at some higher level forced out to where it ruptures.  As such it is an indicator of relative pressure.

How far?  Long barrel greater distance.  I've shot some concrete filled bottles 1000 or more yards.  100 yds or within sight when they land is MUCH better.

I wonder what caliber 2 liter bottles are?

Approximately 4 3/8".  Not quite 12 pounder.
