Cast with Sabots in a T/C Renegade 50
« on: August 12, 2011, 04:52:37 AM »
I looked in the Muzzleloader forums but this just did not seem to fit the forum.
A couple years back I bought a bunch of stuff at a yard sale, there were 3 bags of the black 45 to 50 cal, sabots in with this stuff.
I tried loading them with Lyman 225 Gr LRN and just could not get them to shoot a decent group, I also cast Lyman 255 Gr, SWC. Do you think its worth a try with the heavier bullets, or are sabots just a waste of time in the Renegade.

i think it has to do with the twist in your barrel sabots work best in 1/28 twist not 1/48
i think your renegade has 1/48 or 1/66  well it dont hert to try

Hopefully the bullets you used hadn't been lubricated. Lubed bullets could slip in the sabots, making the slow twist issue even greater. It would be better to use unsized, unlubed bullets, perhaps tumbled with a little rosin to help prevent slippage.

The package on the sabots stated use .451 bullets with the sabots, I cast the 225 grain Lyman bullets out of stick on WW and ran them threw my 450 Lube/Sizer W/out lube with a .451 size die. I did not know if the longer profile of the 255 Gr, Lyman bullet would do any better. But it sounds like it would just be a waste of powder and lead.
Thanks anyway.

In my research I came across this link, If shooting conventional muzzle loaders and want to make the change over to sabots.
