My Handi ready service rack

I just finished this yesterday.  The rack is next to the back door and they're all there and loaded for a quick grab when needed.  When you have a critter problem on a farm, you don't have time to run around looking for ammo.  I have no little kids here to worry about.  My grandkids shoot and have their own guns, so there's no locks on them either.

From top to bottom:  7.62x39, .410, .38-55, .45LC, .357 Max and .32-20.  The .410 wears three 3" slugs, 4s and 6s.  The Maxi has 3 .38s, 3 .357s and 3 Maxis.

Now that is just what I have been wanting. I like my guns where I can see them, not just standing, hiding in a case. I don't have quite the selection, AS YET, but working on it.
 
The four gun rack I built in highschool shop will not hold but one scoped gun. Built that one in 1963 or 1964 so it is bout time fer a new un. ::)

That rack is simple and inexpensive to make.  About 20 bucks.  One 8 ft. 1x4 and 12 hardwood shaker pegs (available at most any lumber/hardware).  Cut the 1x4 in two. Drill half inch holes on a 30 degree angle at least seven inches apart.  Glue in the pegs. Finish as desired.  Find wall studs, predrill clearance holes and screw it to the wall and you're done.  I used 2 inch deck screws, three in each side.

We have two in the bedroom, one over each side of the bed.  Patty's guns on her side, mine on my side.  There's also one in the ground blind out back that holds 4 rifles.

Thanks Richard.  When we bought and remodeled this old farm house we stripped out the nasty glue down carpet, refinished the hardwood floors, put in new windows and doors etc.  Then we put in a new kitchen with hardwood cabinets and a knotty pine ceiling.  We tried to put all the trim back as close as we could to the original.  It's small, but it is warm and comfortable.

I like it,but I am a little paranoid about thieves. But I do keep a H&R Pardner pump riot gun HANDI for those  things that could go bump in the night.

Thieves here would have to get past five dogs without alerting anyone, including a 100 lb. Boxer-Great Dane-Pit Bull, with a very bad attitude toward strangers.  We keep  irregular hours and someone is usually here 24 hours a day.  I'm frequently up and about at two or three in the morning.  On nights when Patty plays in the band, she's not home til after midnight.  When we're gone, as we will be this weekend, my son and grandsons will be here.  In addition, I have security devices about the property.

That is a "well stacked" wall of Handi's! 

Do you find that slings tangle up in the dark?  Seems to me they would. 

Slings are great for walking when you carry on the shoulder for long distances, but if they don't fold down onto the stock tightly, or draw up tightly against barrel and stock, they become a hazard.

Yes they will hang up, but I have learned if you keep the slings behind the rifle below, they won't.

Slings for me have always been an asset rather than a hazard, especially in tangled brush or rough terrain.  I use 1" soft nylon slings.  When in brush, I either sling the rifle muzzle down or gather the sling in my hand.  You often need both hands free to get through some of that stuff.

I only use a sling on a rifle when it's over my shoulder, any other time it's in my fanny pack, you can't be ready for a quick shot if the rifle is on your shoulder.  ;) If I need the sling for a long shot, there's always time to slap it on with modern QR sling swivels.
