Sight blank
« on: August 10, 2011, 01:14:50 PM »
IF I can get the front sight off my Buffalo Classic, what size blank do I need to fill the space?

I've read all the stuff about removing the sight (damage to globe and all that), but can find nothing regarding what size blank to install.  My old eyes have gotten older lately; need a scope.  I reckon I could leave the globe on, but I really want it off.  I've already butchered it up pretty good trying to let light into it.  That didn't work.

Thanks

It's a standard 3/8" dovetail, I use a Marbles sight blank, the only pic I have is of my 405 Win before the octagon mod, but the dovetail slot is the same as the BC.

Any of the  3/8" stuff is 'nominal' and may require some fitting. Always file on the sight, or blank, base, not the barrel dovetail. It is a good idea to 'break' the sharp edges' on the sight or blank as they tend to be too sharp in the barrel dovetail corners and throw you off for fitting.
BTW, you can file your own blank out of steel, or even brass, just use a piece long enough to have the vise hold it really well and work on the end sticking out, then cut it off when done. A nice durable finish on steel is done by heating it and cold blue, repeat 2 or 3 times, cool and oil. On brass just cold blue darkens it up sorta like old patina.

Have done exactly that for muzzle loader barrels, cut it to fit, and rebrowned the barrel, once done it can hardly be seen, easier to do on an octagon barrel tho. That's what an old guy has to do to fill the old dovetail slot when the rear sight has to be moved towards the muzzle to be used!  ::) Brownells and Midway sell dovetail stock for the handiman too.  ;)
