How to install a window AC Unit
« on: August 16, 2011, 09:56:26 AM »
No tools required!!!! I installed this little puppy to cool down my upstairs study/office area. My window type was not compatible with the mounting kit ): But not to worry! My old stool, sturdy shoebox, and wife's old hot pink hand weight did the trick!!! It has been about two months and it keeps the area nice and cool. Ghetto, I know, but I am from south Dallas so I guess it's in my blood....lol. Does anyone know how long window AC's last? I clean the filter every week which I was told it extends the life. Any tips or stories are appreciated as this is my first window unit. Thanks.

Nice installation!  I got one second hand about 5 years ago and it is still going strong, so I don't know how long they last but I expect it is a long time...  ;D

I just stuck one in the window of my work room in the garage Saturday. Lot more pleasant in there now. This one has a 5 year warranty so I think it will last at least that long.

I think mine has a one year warranty. It is an LG brand. It actually cools twice the recommended sq footage. It is 8, 000 BTU rated at 340 sp ft, but the cooling area is around 650 sq ft. It is usually about 105 degrees here daily but the unit will hold a temp of about 78-80 which is nice for this area of my home! I also saw an 80 or so dollar reduction on my electric bill which is nice. Duct tape came in handy when sealing the interior window area and his holding strong. I added a portable LG 9,000 BTU unit in our bedroom since the money savings has been good. The exhaust hose runs out the window. Again I have no use for the bag of screws, duct tape can fix anything (: It cools the room nicely and provides a good "White Noise" for those folks that like that. Me, Momma, and Baby do! I haven't had to run the central AC since late June, and at 100 plus degree daily heat. I just got the first electric bill for the usage time and it is much lower. Very pleased. I may add another unit to my daughter's room in about 6 months when she is old enough to declare it her bedroom. I should see a real cost savings when this high pressure system takes a break in September and the heat retreats.

I have central air in my house and I installed the unit outside back in 1972. It just failed two months ago. Set me back $2,700-couldn't do it myself this time since the old lady got too old to help me. Hoping it will last another 40 years or until I die, whichever comes first.
