Air rifle to eliminate a woodchuck?
« on: July 30, 2011, 08:51:03 AM »
Without going to a CA air rifle what would have enough power to take a woodchuck out to 35 yards or so? Also has to be fairly quiet. Need to  get 22 RF energy   ( 124 lbs at muzzle, )

Above 1000 ft/sec MV, headshot would be nice, broadsite into chest would do it as well. cal .177
What is the point of Life if you can't have fun.

Without CA, you're not going to get anywhere near .22 rimfire energy.
Aim small, miss small!!!

With a stout round nose (domed) pellet you should only need about 15 fpe for good head shots.  A .177 at or around 1,000 fps will penetrate very well.  A .22 cal at around 850 fps will deliver a bit more energy, and with a good pellet and proper placement will work just fine.  The slower .22 will be quieter (not even close to the sound barrier) and cause a larger wound channel, with a hollow point like the Beeman "Crow Magnum" pellet over penetration would not be a concern either.

If you get close and put your shots where they need to be you don't actaully need 22 rimfire energy.  That's good becasue you aren't going to get that much energy out of an airgun without shelling out a pretty penny.  Woodchuck is on the large end of what you should shoot with a pellet gun, but certainly do-able.

Any good 22 springer than you can hit what you shoot at with will do the trick.  Put one in the brain box and reload as soon as you hit him in case you need to go give him the coup-de-gras.
