264 Win mag question

I just got a new Encore barrel in 264 win mag 26 " 1 in 8 twist. I have had real good performance with Nolser Accubonds so I will be developing a load using them. My question is should I try using the 130gr or the 140gr with this twist?
Or will it matter?

Steve, I've never loaded for or shot a .264 Win mag but a 1:8 twist should have no issues with 140 grain bullets.  Interestingly, the somewhat lighter weights in any caliber  often hit harder out at 200 plus yard since they launch at higher velocities.  what distances are you planning to shoot and at what game?

I'm out west so the shots can be long. I will be shooting anywhere from 100 up to 500 yards. I won't be shooting much beyond that. It will be a deer gun only so Im kinda thinking I would like to try the 130 gr to try and keep the speed up.

The original Win loading was 140gr. dual dia. bullet. Remington loaded the same weight. I don't recall if there ever were any other bullet weights in factory ammo.

That's a good twist to have with the 264, the twist is ideal for 140 grain in that chambering. And of course the twist will be great for 130 too, you will just have to see what YOUR barrel likes. Out to 500 yds, it doesn't matter much, mainly in wind drift.
 
Unfortunately, I have a 1-9 in my 264 Number 1. Even so, it has a 26" tube, which will be helpful in getting good speeds, I should not have a problem with the 140 if I push it hard enough. We shall see.

Your 8 twist will stabilize 140 gr bullets but they are not needed for your use. The 130 Nosler Accubond is about perfect for deer. I am shooting it in my custom Rem 700 action 27 3/4" Shilen barrel 264 Win mag rifle for deer. I have taken 5 deer with it  from 80 to 250 yards in the past two years and all were BANG FLOP. Hodgdon Retumbo powder is where you want to start and you probably want need to go any further. My rifle has a good tight chamber and this is the load that I use. It is under the max load in the Hodgdon manual for the 129 gr Hornady bullet which is 67.5 grs and was too hot for my rifle.
I use 66.5 grs Retumbo, CCI 250 Primer, WW cases or WW cases reformed from 7mm Rem mag cases, 130 Accubond, and I load it 10 thousands off the lands in my rifle which is a COAL of 3.450. This averages 3350 fps out of my rifle. Yep it is flaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat shooting and will drive tacks. The Accubond really does a great job on deer. I have only recovered one bullet. It was placed into the front edge of a 200 lb buck that was almost facing me with a slight left shoulder angle toward me at 111 yards. Bullet smashed the front shoulder scapula made soup out of the vitals and was found in the right ham when I was cutting up the meat. The bullet was a text book mushroom and recovered weight was 87 grs. That bullet had to still be going around 3100 fps on impact. That is what I call a great bullet. I would not be afraid to use the same load on elk. Just keep in mind not to shoot that rifle hot. Let it cool pretty good between shots and don't do a whole bunch of paper punching with it and it will last you a life time as a glint edge shoot stick. Good luck and good shooting.

 I loaded for my friend's .264 mag, years ago. he still has the rifle, but uses 140 grain exclusively. He has made some long shots down right of ways,etc. But most of his shots are under 100 yrds, so the 140 Partition works for him.
 Some time back, I had a 6.5/284 made up, long barrel, but short action. I shot the Noselr 120BT and the Nosler 125 partition. Both were crowding 3200, and it was amazingly effective on deer size animals! All this is to say, that Noselr 130 Accubond would be the bullet I would use in that 264 also! I can't imagine a "better" set up for long shots at deer, and it won't have a problem killing them close to you either,ha. Good luck to you.
