Cheap rifle, cheap scope, cheap scope, cheap rings...MOA?
« on: September 01, 2011, 02:03:15 PM »
Yup.  250$ outta the box .270, other than a rubber ring under the forend and a little spray paint fun.  20$ Winchester 130gr PowerPoints.  Had 5 shells left after getting on paper, switching scopes, then getting on paper again.  Shot two groups at 100yds with the last 5 shells, 3 shot group is 1 1/8" center to center and the 2 shot group is 3/4".  With an actual good shooter this gun is easily a sub MOA gun.

I've got to many but never enough!!!!

That's a nice setup, and it works!!

I've got 3 reasons for buying cheap scopes:

    1.  I'm blind in one eye and can't see out of the other.

    2.  I can't shoot worth crap.

    3.  I'm a tight wad.

Glad you got it all sighted in & it sounds like it's doing real well.  I hate you had to run through that much ammo to get dialed in.  You know, it's not that hard to bore sight those single shot barrels.  Just have to look down the bore with the barrel stationary & set that scope on what you're lookin at.  I never have understood the need for those boresighters or lasers either, as long as you can look down the bore.

I boresighted an M1 Garand once that I built from parts (all H&R, BTW), the first shot from it cut one leg of the "X" in the bullseye at 100yards.  I had a highly polished "paddle" glued to an aluminum plate that would sit down in the breach opening, I just had to align the sights after removing the 'paddle'.

Please refresh my memory about the o'rings.  What size and where do you get them?  I remember reading about the o'rings on another post, but do not remember where. I need to try them on a couple of barrels.

thanks

The scope is a Simmons 44 Mag.  Its been on a .280 briefly, lots of time on a .243 and .17 HMR, a bit of time on a 30/06, and now on the .270, and is still solid as a rock.  Adjustments are accurate and precise.  It costs about 100$, which I might add, is NOT cheap to me, but is very cheap compared to most ;)

The reason it took a box to get it on at a 100 yds is my fault.  I took it out and shot a few before I floated, painted, and put the scope I wanted on, just because I couldnt wait to see how it grouped.  then I painted it and floated it, got it on paper, then I switched scopes and had to do it again.  But I really wasnt worried about it, these guns usually get better as they foul a little, and wanted it dirty before doing any serious group shooting.  I can get a gun on paper by looking down the barrel, and have it dead on at 100 in 5 shots if I need too.  I just wasnt worried about it in this case.

I dont use o rings, I actually use rubber washers.  I dont use a specific size, just stick something under there to big enough to keep wood off the barrel.

I've got to many but never enough!!!!

I really like your paint job.
Did you use some kind of pattern to do the leaves?
I know what you mean about the scope swaps, I've got one barrel that I've had 3 scopes on & I'm still not sure I have the one I want on it.

Great post buckslayer!  8)  Nice looking rifle!

All my friends at home I told about Handi Rifles have had the same experience as all of us here.  A great shooting rifle that won't break the bank.

I know many of the guys on here scour the pawn shops for deals on guns, but the same deals can be had for scopes too.  The pawn shop I do alot of business with always has a few.  Not a great selection, but if you need a "cheap" scope and aren't very picky about how it looks, check out a pawn shop.  See what they have.  Ask the owner as sometimes they have stuff they haven't put on display yet.

That's a great minute of deer angle right there, wish I could get my .270 to do that, I can't do that @ 50 yards with my .270, but I haven't gave up on it yet, I hope to float the forend and try again in the next couple days or so.

Good suggestions here on buying scopes.  I have several I have picked up at pawn shops and gun shows.  If I am in the market for a new scope, I am really partial to the Nikon Prostaff 3X9X40.  They can be had for around $100-$125 if you watch the sale flyers.  They and the Bushnell Trophy XLT are my best bang for the buck scopes.  After the 500 S&W broke 2 Simmons and one Tasco in the space of 2 weeks, I've sworn off of the cheap scopes.

I have had bad luck with Cabela's branded scopes. They look like they were made by Tasco. Had two in a row that the adjustments stopped working. You can burn a lot of bullets before you figure out what is going on when that happens. Cabela's is always good about making it right though.

Some of my better scopes have come out of pawn shops.

I am like most of you here and for quite some time had a hard time putting expensive scopes on my inexpensive guns...but in the last couple of yrs after lucking into a deal on a very fine Leupold that has changed .Now my inexpensive scopes are Muellers and Burris and have several Leupolds on guns.there really is no comparison. All of mine have come used and I still have a very hard time putting a scope on a gun that cost some times upward of 3 times what I paid for the gun. But once in the field or at the bench I am glad I made the switch .But there is little doubt you can make these guns shoot!!! Kurt
