1891 Argintine stock.....replacement
« on: September 12, 2011, 04:31:24 PM »
I was given a crudely sporterized 1891 Argentine DWM mark'd mauser sporter all matching T8xxx, I'd like to replace the stock with a Boyd's or some such after markit stock. Any idea what model mauser this is called? is it a model 91 because its a 1891? or a 93 mauser?
When I got it home and pulled it out of the case I found it had a broken fireing pin and boltstop(as is received) a buddy said a model 98 mauser bolt stop and firing pin would interchange.....neither was anywhere close the 1891 firing pin is very slim and anemic compared to the mauser 98's robust jack hammer like steel bar.
The good Folks at Numrich were helpfull to a certain extent with the required replacement parts and now have actual 1891 parts on it but that eyesore stock is awefull.
the front  rear sight were both removed and the williams ramp and receiver were installed.
the bolt was very amiturishly bent in a funky down shaped u.
it'd be allot of work to return this old rifle to military form so best make a better sporter of it.

The bolt can be cut and welded back on to cerate a better look and function. Turn it upside down after removal at the end of the square bolt handle base. Be sure to grind angles on the bolt handle at the base to ensure good penetration. Don't gt it any hotter than needed.. Your M91 still uses the single column magazine and spring loaded extractor, somewhat like the current M16 uses. The small ring mausers such as the 91, 93, 95 etc. all have a problem with bolt face cracking. The 91's seem the worst offenders as I've seen more of them than any of the others.. and the spanish 93's seem nearly as bad. Other mauser stocks won't fit unless you find something for the 1890...  Be sure to check out the bolt face carefully before proceding. You  could graft wood to the stock in strategic places to create the style you wish. Done well this can look quite nice. Use only the best grades of epoxy (I much prefer Devcon 5-ton slow setting) and afterwards stain can be used to blend the wood tones..

For a stock, you may want to check Richards microfit stock for one.....look in the bargain bin section.  This is where I found a nice sporter stock for mine some time ago.   Oh, they can make one for you inletted decently for the 91 mauser action, but a word of caution, long wait for it and sometimes Richard's microfit is fussed about by posters not happy with the company.  If you want a military stock, then check Springfield sporters for one for thay sometimes have one.   By the way, if receiver says 1891 Argentine on it, then that is what it is......one of Mausers early designs and certainly well made.  Mauser introduced the external claw extractor and double stack magazine in the 93 mauser, which your 91 does not have.
