.45 LC BC or .500S&W

Which one to give up. Want to buy some reloading stuff and have decided to sell or trade either my .45LC BC or my .500S&W. Just wondering what you guys thought as to which would be the logical choice to make. Which one gives me the most options when taking handloading into consideration. Hate to part with either but funds for new toys are running pretty low and I have wanted to try my hand at loading my own for a while. My primary hunting handis are my .243 and .280 which will never leave my safe. I lean towards keeping the .500 as I am not real fond of the feel of the BC but a different set of stocks could fix that. Anyway would be interested in any thoughts you might have.

I would sell the 500.  I think the 45 is a more desirable (valuable) handi and down the road you can always put a reamer to it if you want some more power.

I would keep the carbine. They are getting scarce and you can still find the 500's pretty easy.

I agree with Jim and BB, the CR45 hasn't been made since 2008, the 500S&W is still in production, both as a rifle and an accessory barrel. I have two CR45s, one is a 460S&W in gray laminates, the other is new unfired, haven't decided what to do with it yet, thought about making it a Casull since I have the reamer or may just keep it as is, but I don't plan on getting rid of either of them, I don't feel the same way about the 500S&W, it wouldn't make me feel bad if I got the urge to get rid of it, it's always been kind of a novelty chambering IMO, but that's just me.  8)

I agree with all the above for much the same reasons.  In addition, I have Handis in .445SM and .45-70 which will do just about anything the .500 does.  I bought it as a "I need" kind of thing, or a Mt. Everest....cause it's there.  If you restock the BC, I'd keep the stock set.  I think they'll be more valuable down the road in original wood.

selling a gun  is always  a mistake


especially if you have to think about it


getting a companion handgun  would be more practical  for the 45
if you keep the  500.....you  will have to reload  if you are not  rich

Collect cans on the side of the road and turn them in for recycling. 
Most of the guns I have sold, I still kick my self over selling.

On the practical side, the 45C has gobs of stuff reasonably priced (brass, bullets, etc) and you can load it down or up (within reason).
Do we only do what is practical in this hobby?
I like the 500, but dont have one because one hasnt 'fallen in my lap' yet, and I have an original British .577Snider that satisfies that size cartridge urge pretty well. Lacking the Snider I would probably be keepin' my nose in the wind for a 500, even though it makes no sense at all.
For what you can sell one or the other for isnt going to make you pay the bills any longer (if you are that far gone, you are bankrupt already; been there, done that). Just stick one in the back of the safe and play with your favorite for a while, you will circle back to that hidden one eventually (be there, done that too).

I appreciate everyones input. Seems to be a clear majority for the .45LC. Which is what I expected. Tim I think you posted a picture of your .45LC with the laminate stock and I remember thinking it made for a nice looking rifle. I think I will check into buying a set or maybe trading the factory stocks for a set.
 
I understand everybodies thoughts about not selling guns and I agree. In this case I don't mind as much because I will be selling it to the son of a long time friend of mine. His dad never was much into hunting and I have kind of helped him along when he started getting interested in hunting. He will certainly take care of it and the kid (he is 22 now) seems to enjoy recoil so he should enjoy the .500. I told him he could have the one I decided to sell for what I paid for it so he was happy. I alsotold him he could have whatever ammo I have for it as well.

Remember that the lams are a heavy stockset, on a carbine I prefer the PW sets (which are pretty cheap on here) and the schnable forestock looks good even with a PG butt. In 45C you sure dont need a recoil pad and the LOP on them seems too long for a carbine for me (I go 6'1" with fairly long arms and neck). All just me and my impressions over the years, your tastes will likely be different  ;D .

What gcrank said on the lams, I like the looks, but they are heavy, my preferred stock sets are the TDC and the checkered synthetics, the TDC stock is a real nice looking stock and not so heavy, I have them on my 24" 405 Win and the 20" 444, the BC Carbine forend looks good with either as long as the stain is close.
