223 FTF
« on: August 13, 2011, 03:42:46 PM »
I have a 223 that shot the first 40 without a FTF. Now it won't shoot at all on the first strike. Only leaves a small dimple. It will fire on the second strike. I pull the trigger all the way to the rear when firing, so that's not the problem. Will someone please tell me the average the firng pin should stick out when it is dry fired and measured. Also using same ammo. Any help will be appreciated. The firing pin also strikes noticeable off center. Could this contribute to the FTF's?

I had a similar issue with my .223. Is all your ammo factory or reloads?

Thanks, Dinny

I had the same issue with my 223 after approximately 100 rounds. It happened with several brands of ammo. I sent it back to Remington and they repaired it this past week. I really don't know what they did as it is in return transit.
I'll post a reply after Wednesday when it is scheduled to arrive.
They will send you a return label BUT you have to bring the rifle to a UPS counter location. In my case Lenoir, NC which is a hour drive so I ended having a UPS pick up for $12. You also have to pay for return shipping

Got my 223 back today--service  was fast and thorough from Ilion.
They replaced the following, under warranty.
striker/lifter assembly
hammer assembly finish
trigger finish
hammer spring
 and they tested it
I have not fired it yet but I would think all is well.
I would send your rifle back

My money is on the 'lifter/striker', commonly referred to as the transfer bar.
Montveil, I think the rest of the stuff they did was just because they had to tear it apart, so they just throw the kitchen sink at at.
BTW, you wont 'know' if it is fixed until you get enough rounds through it to be confident.

Oh, and it is TOTALLY BOGUS to have to pay return shipping !!! >:(
