Is there anything in the salt-blocks that are used for livestock that would be harmful (or beneficial?) for humans? I looked at some in the feed store a few days ago, no decals on them, and the "staff" didn't know.

The rock salt I used to use in science labs was labelled "not for human consumption".

Thanks, SHOOTALL:

I was in town for an errand and went by Tractor Supply, where they have adults behind most of the counters, and talked with them.  The yellow blocks are ~97% NaCl and 3% sulfur.

In the Foxfire books, some of the recipes for curing meat call for adding a "tad" of powdered sulfur...or one of the nitrites/nitrates... to the salt mix as an extra measure to keep the flies & worms out of the meat.  (They didn't comment on how it affected the taste of the meat.)  So I wonder...could a person grind or otherwise pulverize the yellow blocks and use them as a preservative, as a last resort?

I don't have a clue, but they don't kill the cows, (unless they die of hypertension and we just never suspect it).  ;D   ear

I saw Morton Pool salt at Walmart yesterday. It is about $5 for forty pounds, says nothing added.

Most around here put borax on the smoked meat to kill bugs and washed it off before eating. Smoking seals the meat .

Saw a show about salt on the History Channel. It was a Modern Marvels show. Said that the sea is 3% salt and our bodies are 1%. It shows me how important salt is for survival. No salt where I intend to survive. If I can't store it the only source I know of is animal blood. Many old cultures that live near the sea cook with sea water and get plenty. Old cultures with no source of salt use animal blood raw or like a pudding. I would rather store salt.

How Much Salt Do We Need? About one teaspoon or more of salt per day is necessary to survive. How much more depends on the climate and your current level of perspiration, but the important takeaway is to eat the amount of salt your body craves and not restrict intake.
Take note that there are much better forms of salt than common table salt. Unrefined Celtic Sea Salt provides a number of trace minerals and Wright Salt has been shown to reduce death from stroke and heart disease in Finland.

Sadly do the the economic climate I am stuck working at a feed store even though I have 2 college degrees in the the tech field. "Real Salt", mentioned earlier is mined in Redmond Utah from a deposit from an anient sea bed. The stuff comes out of the ground in chunks like rocks, damn near as hard too. They sell big chunks of it for livestock use and grind it up for human consumpion. I started using it about a year ago thanks to the employee discount. The stuff is great, I will neve use Iodized table salt again given the choice. Do to its source it has somthing like 70 trace minerals in it and no crap. But you also pay for thier marketing which will be obvious when you see the price compared to to the table salt you buy in the store.

As far as other salts, a solar mixing salt is about the closest you will find to pure sodium choride. It can be had from any feed/farm store in 50# bags, just ask for mixing salt and you will get exactly that. As far as the blocks I would highly argue against using them for anything but livestock. They come in all flavors, cobalt, sulfer, iodized, trace mineral, trace mineral w/ selenium, and the list goes on. Just a plain white salt block is simply that, just salt. But try doing anything with a 50# block of salt. 50# of salt is heavier than 50# of anything else.  If you want to argue with that statment try dealing with one for very long and you will see what I mean. Add to that even though they look like it, they are not square and don't stack that well. I would not be afraid to bust a piece off of one and use it if I was in need of salt but it would not be my first choice.
